Mission Statement

Piedmont Wildlife Center encourages conservation and inspires people to build lifelong connections with nature through immersive outdoor education, citizen science, and wildlife stewardship.

About This Cause

Our vision is of a world where people of all ages, ethnicities and walks of life are united by a love and respect of nature, and are committed to the health of the planet and one another for generations to come. Over the years, Piedmont Wildlife Center has blossomed into a community dedicated to building nature connections in all people. Earth’s resources are limited and we must foster a sustainable relationship with nature. This starts with hands-on experiences at a young age. Through our Ambassador Animals and educational programming, we seek to connect people with nature - promoting a healthier, more sustainable future. Our education programs are geared to school-aged children, their families and the general public as we work to instill in the community an awareness and deeper appreciation for nature and the wildlife that share our environment. We give children direct mentoring and support to explore the wonders of nature like never before. We offer them the skills to become passionate learners and environmental leaders. We offer children and teenagers experiences in nature to foster confidence, natural curiosity and a deepening awareness of the intricacies of the world around them. Our adult education programs off adults and older teens a deeper connection to nature through numerous classes and workshops immersed in outdoor exploration and discovery. Topics include ecology, wild edibles, medicinal plants, wildlife tracking, wilderness survival skills, owl prowls, natural arts, and more taught by experts in their specific fields. Piedmont Wildlife Center provides a variety of educational experiences for kids and adults from all walks of life. We believe that a strong connection to nature is a pivotal part of any person’s happiness and well being. Our programs are designed to teach people how to contribute and communicate the need to preserve the natural world around us. We have a Triangle Turtle Trekker program, citizen science project, to track and collect data contributing to a national 100 year study on the Eastern Box Turtle. The eastern box turtle, North Carolina’s state reptile, is in decline across the state. As of 2011, the IUCN has classified eastern box turtles as a vulnerable species (i.e. likely to become endangered unless circumstances are improved). Collecting as much data from turtles across our area is needed. We work in association with Wild Track and UC Berkley School of Information using Artificial Intelligence and FIT software to analyze the photos submitted from citizen scientists to identify individuals for non-invasive monitoring throughout the NC Triangle area and beyond. Our core values are: Gratitude: Taking time to reflect and appreciate the gifts of nature, friends and others Respect: Showing a mutual regard for the feelings, traditions, perspectives, and other qualities of staff and community members Curiosity: Cultivating an environment to safely and enthusiastically explore the mysteries of the natural world and ideas with one another Inclusivity: Emphasizing the power of community and welcoming a variety of identities and backgrounds in a group united by a common goal Awareness: Being conscious of and intentional in how human behaviors and habits impact the world
