About This Cause

Innovation Law Lab is a nonprofit organization dedicated to upholding the rights of immigrants and refugees. By bringing technology to the fight for justice, the Innovation Law Lab empowers advocates to scale their impact and provide effective representation to immigrants in detention and in hostile judicial jurisdictions across the country. Our representation models have formed the basis for many pro bono representation projects anchored in every family immigrant detention center, including Dilley, Karnes, Berks, and the now-defunct, Artesia. In 2017, we partnered with the Southern Poverty Law Center to design and launch the Southeast Immigrant Freedom Initiative (SIFI) which provides pro bono legal services to immigrants detained at four of the country's most notorious detention centers. In partnership with nonprofit and private partners, we operate pro bono representation projects for asylum seekers residing in Kansas City, MO, Atlanta, GA, Charlotte, NC, and Portland, OR. The representation model we piloted in Portland, OR formed the basis for Oregon Equity Corps, a first-of-its-kind, collaborative representation project intended to serve every individual facing deportation hearings at the Portland Immigration Court. As the Trump Administration endeavors to strip away the rights of immigrants and asylum seekers, the Innovation Law Lab has responded. Following the infamous "zero tolerance" policy, we sprung into action by launching a portal to collect information on separated families with an eye towards placing those cases. We also rapidly deployed attorneys and advocates to support individuals who were detained at a federal prison in Sheridan, Oregon, part of the zero tolerance policy's attempt to discourage asylum seekers from attempting to enter the country. As a result of those efforts, we won the release from detention of each one of our 80 clients, a stunning success rate.
