Mission Statement
The Center for Early Childhood Creativity and Innovation at The Walt Disney Birthplace Using the young Walt and Roy Disney as models, The Center for Early Childhood Creativity and Innovation will encourage and promote artistic development and imaginative thinking. The focus will be on children ages 1-13, from pre-education through elementary school grades. The intention is to begin with small community programs and eventually expand to the national level. The Birthplace Home will serve as an icon and a source of inspiration. It will be the physical expression of our core idea that anyone, no matter how humble their background, can become a more creative thinker and achieve The American Dream.
About This Cause
In order to meaningfully contribute and interact within the tech-driven and quickly changing society of today and the future, it is becoming clear that children need to develop competency in the Four C’s of 21st Century Learning: Communication Collaboration Critical Thinking Creativity Numerous studies show how young children are innately creative, curious, and innovative. But it appears that this natural state diminishes over time without practice and encouragement. It is imperative to nurture and build upon children’s natural creativity in their first years when so much critical brain development occurs,in order to best supportchildren on the path towards reachingtheir true potential. The seeds that eventually blossomed into Walt Disney’s creative and innovative approach to life and business began to take hold through experiences he had in the home on Tripp Avenue in Hermosa, where he spent the first four years of his life. In order to honor Walt’s legacy, we will establish a neighborhood creativity and innovation lab, dedicated to bringing out and nurturing these very skills in the children living in the community in which he was born. CECCI at the Walt Disney Birthplace will be the flagship site for an immersive creativity and innovation program that will initially serve Hermosa and the surrounding community’s children aged 0-8, along with their parents, teachers, and caregivers. In time, we hope to share the approach with neighborhoods across the country. There are a number of skills and dispositions that successful, creative and innovative people often share and utilize. By teaching these skills and thinking patterns through hands-on learning experiences – where the child is an active participant in his or her own learning – CECCI will help foster creative thinking, problem-solving, and innovation in young children. CECCI’s programs will strive to introduce and strengthen these skills in fun, age-appropriate ways. “Our greatest natural resource is the minds of our children.” – Walt Disney
