Mission Statement

The Fund for Women’s Equality/ERA Coalition Forward (501c3) and its sister organization ERA Coalition (501c4) were founded in 2014 to bring concerted, organized action to the effort to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment. The 28th Amendment to the Constitution would ensure that women/girls are protected under the law. While the effort to amend the constitution to include sex equality began nearly a century ago, our renewed efforts are centered on leadership in the Black, Indigenous and Women of Color communities, including transgender women/girls, gender-nonconforming individuals, and those who are most impacted by systemic inequities. Since its inception, the Fund for Women’s Equality (FFWE) serves as a convener of national and local organizations focused on the advancement of the 28th Amendment to ensure the coordination of information sharing and collective action.

About This Cause

The Fund for Women’s Equality/ERA Coalition Forward and the ERA Coalition are a movement of movements. We convene a diverse coalition of 300+ partner organizations across the country, representing over 80 million people. From gender, racial, economic and reproductive justice to LGBTQIA+ rights, we unite interconnected, intergenerational and intersectional organizations under one banner: to advance equality. Our partners work to advance reproductive rights, LGBTQIA+ rights, women and girl’s rights, pregnancy protections, pay equity, paid family leave, democracy building, voting rights, youth and faith-based sex equality issues, and more. We are intergenerational advocates in gender, reproductive, racial and economic justice, labor rights and gender-based violence. We are building the power of our coalition to combat increased attacks and mobilize our communities, breaking down silos to build solidarity amongst partners to fight back as one movement against the coordinated rollback of our rights. Our coalition of partners and ability to mobilize is vital for advancing sex equality and positions us to facilitate collaboration and engagement across the country and across sectors, to foster policy change, educate the public, gain support and achieve wins for our movements. Through our coalition, we have a built-in platform for a multiplier effect to extend our reach in order to make equality and the ERA a driving issue. Together we develop national, state and local strategies, build support within Congress, provide legislative expertise, educate the American public about the urgent need for constitutional equality, and more. We are building the groundswell of public support by working on federal, state and electoral initiatives. We advocate in Congress to affirm the Equal Rights Amendment as valid, and promote legislation and initiatives that advance equity, inclusion and equality. In the states, we support introduction and passage of state ratification resolutions, state Equal Rights Amendments and resolutions affirming the federal ERA as valid. We encourage state audits of administrative codes and statutes for gender equality. Our goal is to make equality and the Equal Rights Amendment defining issues in the upcoming elections, broaden public awareness, and increase voter education and participation. Since its founding in 2014, the Fund for Women’s Equality/ERA Coalition Forward and sister organization the ERA Coalition, have dramatically changed the landscape around the movement to recognize the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) as the 28th Amendment. The ERA has satisfied all requirements to be added to the U.S. Constitution and public support for the ERA is overwhelming – over 80% of the country supports the Equal Rights Amendment according to recent polling by Ms. Magazine and the Feminist Majority Foundation. The ERA Coalition has been at the forefront of the movement to mobilize the public and move ERA related policy. Our work building support for the ERA in Congress has led to ERA legislation being passed in the House of Representatives in the previous two sessions and brought for a vote in the Senate this session. We helped legislators move two sets of joint resolutions in the House and Senate. And our three state strategy worked – as of 2020, enough states have ratified the amendment to meet all requirements to be added to the Constitution. Join us as we mobilize millions across the country to unleash a new wave of advocacy, coalition building and education to make the Equal Rights Amendment—and equality—a reality.
