About This Cause

Since 2014, Empowering Epilepsy has been running innovative, results-driven programs and events throughout Northeast Ohio to enable people with epilepsy to take charge of their lives. Approximately 65,000 people in Northeast Ohio have seizures, while many more have these symptoms that remain undiagnosed. It is estimated that 1 in 10 people will experience a seizure in their lifetime, and 1 in 26 people will be diagnosed with epilepsy. People experiencing symptoms may have family members to help but are rarely provided with the opportunity to meet others experiencing seizures, learn strategies to handle or lessen their seizures, or talk with people outside of the medical community. Their knowledge of epilepsy is extremely limited, and as a result, they need to figure out how to handle their seizures and the effects of epilepsy on their lives all by themselves. As a grassroots organization, Empowering Epilepsy is led by people with epilepsy, for people with epilepsy. All our activities are designed to showcase our commitment to creating a caring community of people who understand epilepsy, helping those people and their families live well with epilepsy outside the neurologist’s office, and educating the general public about epilepsy to promote acceptance, awareness and understanding. Programs offered include conferences, sessions, and age based virtual support groups, all with epilepsy specialists from Level 3 and 4 Epilepsy Centers. Our Empowering Epilepsy Headquarters also hosts art therapy, special events, educational sessions, and classes focused on improving participants mind, body and spirit. Our center also offers lifestyle guidance through peer and expert interactions. Our programs are offered at low- or no cost, which we are able to provide due to the generosity of local, statewide and national donors and foundations.
