About This Cause
The National Veterans Council for Legal Redress is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit charity organization that is devoted to making a difference in the New Haven, CT communities. For Veterans. The NVCLR collaborates with the Yale University Law School for their legal services. The NVCLR and the Yale Law School along with Dean of the Law School were able to change legislation for NVCLR Veterans, the legal team were able to get the former Secretary of State Chuck Hagel.to write a memo stating that, "if any Veteran was diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and received a less than honorable discharge, the Veterans discharge should be given special consideration by Department of Defense and the Veteran's discharge should be changed and upgraded". However, this memo was written because a member of the National Veteran Council was experiencing symptoms of PTSD and was discharged from the military in 1970 with a less than honorable discharge and PTSD was not recognized by the military until 1980. Although, this Veteran tried many avenues for forty-five years to get his discharge changed to no avail. However, it wasn't until this Veteran joined up with the National Veterans Council and collaborated with the staff at the Yale University Law School, they became advocates for this Veteran and four other Veterans. So, it wasn't until the DOD (Dept of Defense) reviewed the Veterans records once again and then decided to upgrade the four Veterans discharges because of the memo that was written by Secretary of State Chuck Hagel. The National Veterans Council for Legal Redress mission is to help Veterans through legal services to help them get their discharges upgraded and to help Veterans get the service-connected benefits that these Veterans are entitled to. The NVCLR holds a monthly empowerment meeting every third Thursday of each month at City Hall Building in downtown New Haven, CT. Therefore, at NVCLR monthly empowerment meeting there are many guest speakers from State Senator Blumenthal office, Congresswoman DeLauro's, office, Representative from VA Regional Office, and many Professionals that are heads of department from the VA Medical Center in West Haven Ct., even representatives from the Women Services and Iraq and Gulf War representative too. NVCLR does many referrals for homeless unemployed, for educational benefits, and legal services for our Veterans. NVCLR believes in serving those who served.
