Mission Statement

The Make Music Alliance supports the growth and coordination of Make Music Day celebrations throughout the United States, and internationally. Every year we facilitate thousands of performances and interactive music-making activities, all free and open to the public, bringing together amateurs, aficionados, and seasoned professionals into an inclusive celebration of music.

About This Cause

Modeled on France’s Fête de la Musique, Make Music Day is the international celebration of music that takes place on June 21st (the summer solstice). Unlike a traditional music festival, Make Music Day is not limited by genre, professional status, or income. Instead, diverse musical groups from mariachi bands to jazz combos to chamber ensembles take to the streets, and traditional and nontraditional venues open their doors, stages, and even parking lots. The only requirement is that each event be free and open to the public. In 2023, roughly 500,000 people attended over 4,800 such performances, which took place in more than 110 cities and towns nationwide. Participating cities ranged from Santa Fe, New Mexico, to New York City, to Salem, Oregon. Most city events are organized by individual “chapters”, which in turn are often run by local chambers of commerce, businesses, nonprofits, or volunteers, as Make Music Day brings out both residents and nonresidents and is an excellent way to showcase a community’s cultural and civic vitality. Another unique feature of Make Music Day is its participatory nature – while many events feature groups of musicians performing for an audience, many others actively educate community members. These have included a 300-person guitar lesson in Union Square, NYC and large group harmonica classes (with free harmonicas) in Platteville, WI. And in Detroit and Los Angeles, music producers set up mixing stations to record passersby, demonstrate how they record and mix audio, and ultimately generate a musical snapshot of their community. Inspiring the next generation of musicians and broadening audiences is at the heart of Make Music Day. Coordinating Make Music Day nationwide requires tremendous effort and participation from hundreds of local volunteers, which is the role of the Make Music Alliance. We provide each local chapter with the technical and logistical resources to produce Make Music Day in their city. Our support includes an individualized website and customized software to match interested venues with performers (which we continue to refine in response to our chapters’ needs), PR support through a firm retained on the national level, and access to free musical instruments through some of our national partners. We also serve as a fiscal sponsor where appropriate, and produce a number of national programs with an educational focus, which local chapters can tap into to augment their own programming. For example, this past year we offered all chapters the chance to present “Stridulations,” a piece by noted percussionist Billy Martin that unites musicians and non-musicians in a cohesive ensemble, by providing the music and a free lesson with Mr. Martin in early June of 2023. We also have partnerships with local musicians unions, helping to secure funding for union performers to share their artistry with the public for free.
