Mission Statement

Black Educational Achievement Movement (BEAM) works to ensure Black students have access to high-quality, culturally-specific educational experiences that promote positive self-identity, and cultural awareness. These social lexicons prepare students to compete in a global marketplace for educational opportunities, career exploration, and/or develop an entrepreneurship mindset.

About This Cause

The Black Educational Achievement Movement (BEAM) is committed to providing high-quality educational experiences to Black students. We believe that all students deserve the opportunity to reach their full potential, and that extracurricular cultural experiences can play a vital role in helping students to develop their identities, explore their interests, and prepare for future success. BEAM Village is a nonprofit organization that provides culturally-responsive educational curriculums, leadership development, and community-based programming to counter the low achievement, hopelessness, and lack of opportunity that current public and private schools provide to most Black students. The signature event is the annual Black Student Success Summit (BSSS). This is a day-long event that provides workshops on academic success, college preparation, career exploration, and general life skills designed for Black and Multiracial high school and college students. The BSSS is led by local Black professionals who share the lived experiences of the students. This provides invaluable mentorship and a sense of belonging. The BSSS aims to enhance students' social capital, which refers to the networks and resources they can access. This helps students build a strong foundation for success. The organization has several student-centered outreach events each year, as well as two community “Meet and Greet” events to bring neighbors together and students get to share the knowledge they are learning in the Learning Hubs (LH). BEAM offers an 8-week summer program that provides cultural experiences to Black students. The program exposes students to a variety of career paths and allows them to work hands-on in developing, designing, and building a different learning model with informal mentoring embedded in every experience. All courses are grounded on positive identity development and strategies for navigating the current education system. Our Community-based Learning Hub (LH) model organizes youth programming that includes historical walking tours and storytelling related to the history of devastation, trauma, and resilience of the Black community in Portland. One of our partnering LH partners is Feed’em Freedom Foundation, where students go to their Mud-Bone Grown farm in Corbett, weekly to learn about agriculture, horticulture, and hydroponics as well as growing herbs that can heal your body. Another LH is the MAYO House, where students work with multiple Universities (U of O, PSU, & amp; The NW College of Arts to learn City planning, policies, spatial justice, and more. Our LH partners are MESO where students learn entrepreneurial fundamentals and NE STEAM Coalition where students explore their maker space projects. The Summer Program is a unique and important opportunity for Black students. The program will provide students with access to high-quality extracurricular cultural experiences, help them develop their identities and interests, and prepare them for future success.
