GIRLS HEALTH ED

WASHINGTON, District of Columbia, 20016 United States

Mission Statement

To advance gender equality by fostering healthy, informed, and empowered decision-making among adolescent girls and wellbeing, particularly those from low-income, underserved communities, through comprehensive health and sexuality education.

About This Cause

Our Organization Girls Health Ed is a volunteer, community based organization that seeks to educate girls aged 8-17 about their health. We exist to help girls make healthy, informed decisions about their lives by having teaching fellows from relevant fields teach seminars in local schools and community centers. Who We Help We focus on low-income girls and young women who are less likely to obtain accurate information about their changing bodies from their school or home environments. We aim to instill confidence through knowledge to ensure that girls walk away with a valuable reference they are able to use throughout their adult lives. We use health education to maximize the positive impact that girls and young women are able to have on their communities and empower them to change their lives for the better. To date, we have impacted more than 3,000 girls through our programming Why We Are Different We are different from other health-related organizations that serve girls and young women because we focus on the whole girl. We realize that true health comes from equal emphasis on many aspects. Our four modules are nutrition and body image, physical fitness, personal care/hygiene and reproductive health. We also provide sanitary products and other personal hygiene items free-of-charge in 50% of our workshops. Where We Serve Currently we operate in the United States in Washington, DC, New York City, Los Angeles, and New Orleans. We also serve girls internationally in Bangladesh and Kenya.
