Mission Statement
City Surf Project connects youth to the ocean and themselves through surfing. We use surfing as a vehicle to teach ocean safety, environmental protection, health, and life skills.
About This Cause
Using the ocean and coastline as common ground, CSP bridges the opportunity gap between San Francisco’s low-income and affluent neighborhoods. CSP is the offspring of a teaching experience: While teaching underserved students in San Francisco’s Leadership High School, CSP’s co-founder Johnny Irwin took several students on surfing field trips with the help of Hunter Chiles, CSP co-founder and San Francisco Fire Department Paramedic. The experience of being in the ocean and riding waves deeply affected the students, many of whom had never before visited a local beach. The students learned how to work through frustration; their confidence grew; and they fell in love with the ocean. One student - Tre’von – reflected that the surfing experience “changed his whole outlook on life.” Through its surfing program, CSP connects urban youth to the awe-inspiring ocean and the magical feeling of riding waves. Its participants have the opportunity to relieve stress, heal from trauma, and find a place of meditation. Through the process of learning to surf, CSP participants learn patience, problem solving, and the maxim that hard work pays off. These skills transfer readily to other challenging parts of their lives, like school, home, the neighborhood, and social life. City Surf Project has implemented its surfing program at Leadership and Mission High Schools in San Francisco, and we are currently building programs in San Francisco’s other public high schools. During Summer 2016, CSP will run a series of surf camps and ocean safety camps. All programs begin with teaching swimming proficiency in preparation for learning to surf. Swim lessons are followed by paddling and ocean safety lessons. Once participants are comfortable on a surfboard and swimming in the ocean, surf lessons begin at one of the Bay Area’s beginner-friendly surf beaches. CSP relies entirely on the support of individuals and organizations to make our program possible.
