About This Cause
The Jarrell Community Library and Resource Center (JCLRC) is a small 501(c)(3) nonprofit library located 40 miles from Austin, Texas and established in May 2019. In 2021, the library benefited from a local grant that enabled the hiring of a part-time director. Presently, the library employs three part-time staff members, is supported by 67 volunteers, maintains a small Friends of the Library group, and is governed by a seven-member Executive Board. Jarrell and its surrounding region are experiencing significant growth, largely due to the nearby Sonterra master-planned community, which lies directly across the highway from Jarrell. While Jarrell's population is approximately 5,000, the Sonterra master-planned community has expanded to 20,000 residents over the past five years and is projected to double in size within the next five years. Sonterra operates as a Municipal Utility District (M.U.D.) and functions as an independent governing body. This duality within the library's community creates a complex funding landscape. Although the city provides funding to ensure the library meets accreditation standards, the Sonterra M.U.D. offers low-rent space for the library within its community center but is legally prohibited from providing financial support. Consequently, the library relies on fundraising initiatives, donations, and grants to maintain its operations. The Jarrell Library and Resource Center serves as an essential hub for the community. Offering business, educational, health, and social services, technology, business services, notary services in Spanish and English, adult and children’s literacy classes, community educational seminars, and a small food pantry.
