There are eight million children living in orphanages worldwide—even though 80% of them are not orphans. Most children are institutionalized because their parents are poor and cannot adequately provide for them. And while many institutions are established with good intentions, more than 80 years of research proves that raising children in orphanages harms their health and development, increases their exposure to abuse and puts them at risk of future criminal activity. Put simply, children need families, not orphanages. Lumos, a non-profit founded by J.K. Rowling, has the proven solution. We reveal the hidden children and transform systems of care globally. About This Cause
Most children who are institutionalized actually have families—families who simply need help raising their children. Circumstances such as war or natural disaster, discrimination on the grounds of ethnicity or disability, or simply extreme poverty make desperate parents seek help. But, for many, the only option they are given is to put their child in an orphanage. With support, most families could care for their children. And children without families could be looked after in foster or adoptive families, or provided with other care to meet their needs. The developing infant brain needs the stimulation and nurturing that is only found in the unconditional love of a family. Orphanage staff rarely have time to respond to individual needs. The child’s only contact with another human being is reduced to a few hurried minutes each day. Isolated and afraid, they do not develop as they should. As they grow up, their desperate need for love and affection puts them at serious risk of trafficking and exploitation. Furthermore, orphanages are expensive to run, even with their poor results. This shocking global problem has an affordable solution. Lumos is a non-profit organization committed to making family care for all children a global reality by 2050. Founded by J.K. Rowling and named after the spell in the Harry Potter books that brings light to the darkest of places, we reveal the hidden children and transform systems of care globally. We work with international donors, governments and communities, helping them redirect funds from orphanages to provide health, education and social services, so children can be raised in loving families.
