Mission Statement
Pet Peace of Mind's mission is to enrich the quality of life and well-being of hospice and home health care patients by providing a national support network to help care for their companion pets. The program, delivered through local hospices and home health organizations, provides hands-on pet care services such as walking, play time, waste clean up, transportation to appointments, and many other services. Some partners even provide financial assistance with veterinary, grooming, and boarding costs. Most programs also offer assistance with pet adoption so patients can pass in peace knowing their pets will be part of a new family who will love and care for them. Partner organizations in 44 states currently operate Pet Peace of Mind programs.
About This Cause
Many people share a deep emotional and spiritual bond with their pets. Pets are loved like family members and provide a great deal of comfort for their people as they navigate the end of life journey. For many, keeping their pets near them during the last chapter of life and finding homes for their beloved pets after they pass is one of the most important pieces of unfinished business. As a patient’s disease progresses, they eventually become too ill to provide even the most basic care such as walking, feeding, and grooming their pets. As families deal with grief and loss during hospice care, pets may be overlooked or forgotten, or treated as an afterthought by family members unfamiliar with the patient’s bond with a pet. For these reasons, family members are generally not a good option for assuming pet care responsibilities Pet Peace of Mind is committed to educating hospices, hospitals and home health agencies about the importance of pets in the lives of hospice patients and helping them support patients and pets in practical ways as they share the end of life journey together. The program provides a turnkey solution to help establish a program to recruit and train their own volunteers to help patients with their pet care needs and trains them in techniques to enable covering the cost of veterinary care, food, grooming and boarding needs if the patient is unable to pay. Pet Peace of Mind provides training in all procedures for delivering help when and where it’s needed and provides ongoing coaching and advisory support to ensure the program’s longevity. Pet Peace of Mind programs are open to any hospice, palliative care, hospital or home health program in the United States.
