About This Cause
Saruni International is organized exclusively for charitable, humanitarian and educational purposes that qualify under section 501(c) of the Internal Revenue Code. The specific purposes of the Corporation are to promote community health education, provide hope and dignity to vulnerable women and children, restore those rescued from abuse and/or human trafficking, care for and educate orphans and build healthy marriages and families. Initially, Saruni International plans to address the tragic issues facing young girls in Kenya. The "girl child" in Kenya is born into a life full of obstacles and suffering. In homes of the impoverished the "girl child" is looked upon as a commodity by her tribe. One day while she is quite young her father will receive cows from her wedding dowry adding to his wealth. At a very young age, she will learn that she has no voice, no rights and no place to be safe from the atrocities that will soon be her future. Young girls are given in marriage to old men, some 8 years old, or even younger, to men in their seventies. Sometimes a "girl child" is already promised for marriage while in her mother's womb. Young girls are married off to old men where they will become the third, fourth or even fifth wife. Being the youngest wife, they endure the most hardships as did the older wives before her. She will be expected to milk the goats and cows, gather firewood from afar, fetch water on her back from miles away, feed the family, meet her husband’s sexual demands and do whatever other work is there on a daily basis....for the rest of her life. Many young girls are not allowed to get an education since her sole role is to be a wife and bear children. In Kenya, only 64% of young girls start primary school; barely 24% ever get to secondary school; and a mere 2% will actually finish secondary school. So just being a girl and being poor, she will miss 25% of her education. She still has to keep her grades up while competing against the boys in her class. Consequently she doesn't test as well. Her father reasons “why should she go to school", so he forces her to drop out and get married. She has no one to fight for her. She has no voice, no face. Saruni International is ready to address the painful situation of the “girl child” in Kenya. We believe every young girl deserves to have a voice and a future. These young girls first need to be rescued and placed in a safe environment away from abusive family and tribal practices. They need to be given an education and to be taught life skills that will help them ensure a future for themselves. They need to be loved by "trusted" adults and given hope and confidence that they can have a normal life. One organization that we have found that is meeting these needs is the Olooloitikoshi Girls Rescue Center in, Kajiado District, Kenya. The Olooloitikoshi Girls Rescue Center is operated by CMA; a government recognized NGO that has been doing humanitarian work in Kenya for over 25 years. Saruni board members have seen first hand the rescue efforts and the positive results of girls that have passed through their program. To do all of this, Saruni International plans to raise awareness and funds to help rescue girls caught in these tragic practices through speaking engagements, fund raising events, engaging service clubs and other humanitarian entities. We will be doing all of this with unpaid volunteers.
