Mission Statement
Seven Council Fires Native Art is a 501c3 nonprofit created to empower and promote Native American artists and crafters and to preserve Native arts traditions through youth outreach, selling opportunities, education, events and projects.
About This Cause
Poverty levels on Indian reservations are staggering. Many things contribute to the low income rates, including lack of jobs. Meanwhile, a large percentage of Native Americans attempt to earn all or part of their income through arts and crafts. The Seven Fires Art web site, www.SevenFiresArt.com, provides a way for Native artists to reach customers around the world, benefiting themselves, their families, as well as reservation economies, while connecting with and preserving their cultural identity through the arts. Our Board has extensive knowledge of the art scene as well as of the serious hardships facing the people of Pine Ridge and other reservations and two of our four board members are tribal members. Our position has always been one of openness to collaboration. We have several partnerships on the Reservation and we intend to seek partnerships wherever beneficial to our Members. To date, no officer or board member of Seven Fires has received a salary and our policy has always been to create two paid positions on a reservation before paying any administrator salaries. Generating income is a primary objective for the Art Center and we have increased our sales dramatically every year. We currently have over 70 Member Artists, have received overwhelming support and have over 2000 followers on Facebook. Our online presence is well established as are many close relationships. A web site is the most efficient way to build a business, but is not feasible for many Native artists to accomplish on their own and we are making this happen for may artists in a significant way. We also provide support for artists attending art shows, supplies, have a great print program providing residual income where none existed before, and have many other goals. With the support of employee and employer giving through Brevity, we can create even more opportunity by moving the website operation to the Reservation, increasing participation and inventory* and expanding our services. *When we pay artists for their work (and we pay fair prices), they receive income and we increase our inventory, which then provides a return on investment, which is then paid out again, resulting in more income to artists!! It is an unusual model that is truly working!!
