Mission Statement
Stockings from Karen gives the gift of self esteem to teen foster girls during the holiday season by delivering Christmas stockings filled with esteem building toiletries, makeup, accessories and school supplies.
About This Cause
Stockings from Karen (SFK) was founded in 2014 by former foster youth LeeAnn Petersen in honor of her foster mom Karen. LeeAnn was placed in Karen's foster home the day after her 15th birthday. That Christmas LeeAnn received her first ever Christmas stocking filled with personal care products, makeup, accessories and magazines. The feeling of love and belonging it gave her made quite an impression on LeeAnn and is the reason she wanted to pay it forward by starting Stockings from Karen. SFK collects donated goods all year around and then hosts several stocking stuffing parties leading up to the holiday season. SFK works through local and regional Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) programs to deliver the stockings to teen foster girls. In 2018 SFK also began delivering Christmas stockings to teen boys. SFK mainly serves the Washington, DC metropolitan area but has plans to eventually go nationwide.
