About This Cause

Healthy Food America is on the frontlines of the fight to ensure that ALL people have access to healthy, nutritious food, and are less exposed to unhealthy, highly processed foods that fuel obesity and preventable chronic diseases. In just the past 12 months Healthy Food America has emerged as a national leader in building a movement to take on a primary driver of diabetes, heart disease and dental decay – the vast amounts of added sugar in our food and beverage products. From Philadelphia to Baltimore to Boulder, from Illinois to Alabama, communities across the country are building on Healthy Food America’s research, advocacy and communications savvy to drive policies and industry change that will improve well-being for all people – especially among low-income and communities of color, who suffer disproportionately from the health harms from sugar added to processed foods. We are building a movement to achieve this vision by: Changing policy: With legislative gridlock preventing action at the federal level, HFA believes states and localities can and should act now to adopt policies that will save lives and health care dollars. We currently are supporting communities pursuing two key strategies: First, warning labels on sugary products and advertisements that can give people information to protect themselves and their kids, while sending a powerful signal to industry to reduce harmful added sugar. And second, taxes on soda and other sugary drinks—just like those on tobacco—that can raise awareness of health harms from sugary drinks and reduce their consumption, while generating millions of dollars to help communities address critical health and other needs, especially in low-income communities disproportionately affected. Transforming Research into Action: Emerging nutrition and health research can be difficult to interpret. Having a strong handle on the best, most defensible science gives advocates an edge and helps them prevent opponents of change from capitalizing on confusion. Healthy Food America tracks and translates research for the public and policymakers, and commissions occasional research to fill gaps in understanding and highlight key issues. We provide support to enable rigorous evaluation of policy actions to identify those worthy of taking to scale. Providing Technical Support: A growing number of policymakers and advocates are ready to act - but they need encouragement, support and evidence. That's where we come in! We provide action-ready toolkits, plus customized advice and guidance, to give communities the information they need to wage the fight against Big Soda and other giants of the food industry. Raising Awareness and Driving Change: We are committed to developing hard-hitting, far-reaching strategies and campaigns to educate the public and policymakers about sugar and health. We work to deliver these messages through news, social and – where possible – paid media, fostering conversation about sugar and health among opinion influencers, policy makers and consumers.
