Mission Statement
Our mission is to build an intergenerational, intercultural national movement to end child incarceration while working to eliminate the racial inequities that permeate the justice system.
About This Cause
The Gathering for Justice is the social justice organization founded by Harry Belafonte in 2005. The Gathering utilizes Kingian nonviolence as a social application for change and civic engagement. The organization is unique in that we provide direct services, engage artists and cultural leaders as foot soldiers in grassroots mobilization, and consult and advise on legislative and policy initiatives while organizing in local and national communities – all to sustain and build this Movement, the essence of which is grounded in the Movement for Racial Justice. Since 2013, The Gathering and our social justice task forces Justice League NYC & CA, have been building justice initiatives on multiple fronts. Justice League NYC & CA are multi-disciplinary task forces of juvenile and criminal justice experts, artists, educators, direct service providers, activists, and formerly incarcerated individuals, brought together under the auspices of The Gathering for Justice. Operating as a coalition, members conjoin their areas of expertise and resources in an intentional effort to reform the criminal and social justice system in New York City, California, and across the world. As catalysts for community change, we recognize the power of our elders’ wisdom and the youth’s energy to achieve great impact on the larger society.
