Mission Statement

Code to Inspire (CTI) is a U.S.-based 501c3 nonprofit with a mission to empower young women in Afghanistan to drive economic and social progress. We do this by employing local mentors to teach them how to code, help them find programming jobs, and guide them to build digital careers and launch technology ventures toward economic independence.

About This Cause

Founded in 2015 by Computer Science professor and former refugee Fereshteh Forough, CTI is the first coding school for young women in Afghanistan. Classes are taught in one of the safest neighborhoods in Herat, near the university and public transportation. CTI not only offers a full curriculum with clear entry and exit points for women aged 18 and above, but also provides a safe space for women with free wifi, air conditioning, snacks and drinks -- and most importantly, a place to connect, support each other, exchange ideas, and build for the future. Supported by organizations and individuals committed to the advancement of women in technology, CTI has now taught more than 550 young women how to code, build mobile apps and games, earn above-average wages, and begin a path to self-sufficiency in a country where 78% of women are unemployed. In short, CTI has been a key factor in the success of a growing number of women in Afghanistan.
