Mission Statement
412 Food Rescue is a nonprofit with an innovative technology-based model that aims to fight hunger and promote sustainability by preventing perfectly viable food from entering the waste stream and directly distributing to organizations that benefit those who are hungry.
About This Cause
412 Food Rescue launched in 2015 as a direct response to the disconnect between the nearly 40% of all food that is wasted in the U.S. and the 1 in 5 people experiencing food insecurity in Southwestern PA. At its core, 412 Food Rescue conducts food recovery and redistribution operations by diverting surplus food and directing it to households in high poverty areas and nonprofit partners that serve food insecure populations. 412 Food Rescue works daily to decrease food waste and improve the health and wellbeing of our community members through surplus food rescue. In 2023 alone, 412 Food Rescue recovered and redistributed 4,397,523 million pounds of surplus food through 29,672 rescues! Our Food Recovery Operations is powered through volunteer drivers, who are alerted to available rescues through our proprietary technology platform, Food Rescue Hero. The Food Rescue Hero technology and logistics platform was created by 412 Food Rescue to scale impact on food waste, food insecurity and climate change. This end-to-end solution supports food recovery logistics and equips volunteer drivers with an app that makes claiming food rescues easy and convenient, with step-by-step, real-time guidance. In 2018, our Food Rescue Hero technology began its first pilots outside of Pittsburgh via partners in San Francisco (Food Runners), Philadelphia (Philly Food Rescue) and Cleveland (Hunger Network Food Rescue). In 2020, it received Fast Company’s World Changing Ideas Award. To date, the network has expanded to include 17 partners covering more than 25 regions in the US and Canada and we have collectively reached more than 182 million pounds of food recovered! The Good Food Project was born in 2019 as a solution to effectively utilize niche, unplanned, or odd quantities of food that otherwise would be highly difficult to distribute through traditional food rescue channels. Our Zero Waste Kitchen stabilizes and transforms surplus food into more than 1,300 healthy, heat-and-eat and frozen meals each week. Every meal is housed in compostable packing and is made of recovered, good surplus food which would have otherwise ended up in a landfill. Launched in October of 2021, the Grocery Bagging Program, in partnership with the Housing Authority of City of Pittsburgh leverages large donations of fresh, frozen, and non-perishable items to provide nutrition assistance to communities experiencing food insecurity. Volunteers help repackage bulk foods into individual servings then pack over 500 grocery bags each week to be distributed to various Housing Authority of the City of Pittsburgh locations. Our Home Delivery service was launched at the height of the COVID pandemic to respond to the thousands stranded as traditional hunger organizations were forced to close their doors. We now serve more than 200 households who receive healthy food on their doorsteps weekly or monthly, delivered by one of our 1,300+ in-app background-check-verified volunteer drivers.
