About This Cause

Excellence by Design Education Center is a 501c3 non-profit organization located in Dallas, Texas. We are service-focused and provides educational programs and supplementary educational services focused on promoting educational equity by closing the gap between opportunity and achievement for all children and raising all students' achievement. Our organization specializes in developing programs tailored to individual as well as group needs. The C.E.O. of Excellence by Design Education Center, an educator with 30 years of educational experience, recognized the critical need to support children and youth who live in or near poverty while working with students within the juvenile system. This recognition of a critical need to transform minds and build an ecosystem that would bridge the equity gap between opportunity and achievement for all children and youth was the driving force for the birth of Excellence by Design Education Center. The goal of EDEC is to promote educational equity by (1) closing the gap between opportunity and achievement for all children and youth no matter what zip code they reside in and (2) raising the achievements of all students especially those who struggle. EDEC's "Whole Village" approach provides academic support including social-emotional learning and social and economic resources that include food, clothing, essential goods, school supplies, and uniform to ensure that every student has what is needed to succeed in school and life. WHAT WE DO - We believe in the power of learning. We serve schools and community organizations by providing extended school day, weekend, and summer supplementary programs. Our programs and services transform minds and change lives by (1) equipping students academically, (2) engaging them relationally, (3) empowering them to succeed, and (4) preparing students for college and career readiness. WHY EXCELLENCE BY DESIGN? - Our program is tailored to the specific need of our beneficiaries. Our tutoring program give pretests and based on the scores, we develop a customized individual learning plan (LLP) tailored to the specific needs of the student. Our unique feature is that we strive to keep our cost low, based on ability to pay and our programs are intentionally designed to target individual needs. • We utilize an integrated curriculum using the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (T.E.K.S.) framework. • Our programs allow learners to experiment with ideas in hands-on, real-world situations through exploration and experiential learning. • Promote cooperative rather than competitive experiences. • We promote higher-level thinking skills geared toward problem-based, service learning, active inquiry, and problem-solving. • Help professionals give back to the community by providing volunteer services and expertise. We partner with schools, parents, and the community, to accelerate student achievement in districts and schools in the Greater Dallas area by strengthening academic, civic, and character outcomes through service learning. With online content, customized professional development, tools, resources, and more, we lead the way to transform the community into classrooms and inspire all young people to serve. EDEC engages with community organizations serving Dallas’s neediest populations. According to the 2019 school report card, most of the schools identified in EDEC’s geographic service areas are rated low performance in reading, math, and writing skills. These schools also report needing external programs and organizations to collaborate with to help motivate students to learn. EDEC’s partnerships with the community, local organizations, and schools are helping deliver holistic and effective programming to students with the most need. Currently, there are over 70,000 students living in the areas served by EDEC. Over 22,000 (>31%) of these students are living in poverty and could benefit from the programs offered by EDEC. At this time, EDEC currently provides services for 1,959 of these students. There is an opportunity for EDEC to grow and have a much larger positive impact on the community. Currently, we offer five programs: 1. Reach One Teach One Literacy Program offers literacy education, general tutoring services, S.T.A.A.R test prep, study skills, and homework assistance. 2. What Students Are Saying Thank you EDEC for coming and showing us how to make galaxy rocks and explaining to us what is in the galaxy rock and letting us have fun with learning----Sylvia (student) This program is helpful in getting us to our next grade and it is fun—Amaya (student) What Organizations Are Saying The Education Department in Family Gateway is responsible for meeting the student's emotional, social, and educational needs no matter the family's economic status. I have had the pleasure of working with EDEC) and Mrs. Miller for a year. I have had the opportunity of witnessing her many abilities. I have never been more amazed by an educator’s passion and commitment to the arts of teaching. She has provided an opportunity for students to feel connected to their own learning styles by implementing an artistic lesson plan, increasing the TEKS percentages, and ongoing development. Mrs. Miller and EDEC’s devotion, eagerness, and structural techniques have increased the Education Department's transitional learning regime. -----------Darrie’l Smith, MSW -Family Gateway Education Department Donors We are proud to contribute to Excellence by Design Education Center (EDEC), because EDEC is an organization that provides needed educational, life skills, and social development benefits that impact the lives of disadvantaged and underserved youths in our communities.
