Mission Statement
Westside Project Helping Hand, Inc., provide accessible, high-quality nutritional foods to help prevent mental health disparities in a community with limited nutritional base value. What American people chooses to put on their plates not only serve as nourishment to their bodies and to fill their stomachs, but it can inadvertently diminish their mental health which can leave them with the growing struggle of stress, depression, anxieties, mood changes and areas of mental health that can leave a community who is already battling to combat food disparities with consistent conflict. As cited by Grajek et al, (2022) there has been a surge in research on the effects of nutrition on mental status, which may be an important aspect of the prevention of many mental disorders and, at the same time, may lead to a reduction in the proportion of people with mental disorders. This grant proposal aims to answer whether and to what extent higher nutritional based food can change the lifestyle by simply having available nutritional food items on their table with the support of mental health intervention. Poor food diets can affect mental health and there is scientific evidence supporting a link between diet and mental health. According to Muscaritoli (2021) an increasing number of studies are revealing that diet and nutrition are critical not only for physiology and body composition but also have significant effects on mood and mental well-being. In particular, Western dietary habits have been the object of several research studies focusing on the relationship between nutrition and mental health. We will aim to Introduce the community residents to addressing their mental health needs as it will aim to increase heathier nutritional habits.
About This Cause
The Leath Street Baptist Church (LSBC) through their member and partner’s 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, Westside Project Helping Hands Inc. provides underserved children, seniors, and adults with low to moderate incomes with nutritional food opportunities yet, we are lacking in providing fresh available proteins, dairy products and whole grain food items. The program’s licensed clinical social worker has researched and found a connected coalition of evidence between healthy food consumption and healthy mental health. As supporting evident shown through the grant writing conducted by Turner, L. (2025), “Food insecurity is a persistent public health challenge that affects communities across the United States, particularly in rural areas like Breaux Bridge, Louisiana. Defined as a lack of consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. Food insecurity is linked to numerous adverse health outcomes, including chronic diseases, poor mental health, and developmental delays among children (Coleman-Jensen et al., 2023; Wolfson et al., 2021)”. As the grant writer for this current project and having witnessed the number of families who come through the LSBC’s monthly drive through food pantry is growing and the need for proteins, dairy and grain products are diminishing. The licensed clinical social worker is seeking to pair a mental health and wellness wrap-around initiative to provide services to address community members’ mood swings, stress levels, anxieties, depression, poor sleep, and memory decline due to poorer nutrition. We have outlined the grant’s line-item needs under the budget section. As we combined to support our current food program and seek to add a mental health and wellness wrap-around program it will be a win for the residents. We are asking for $109.500 to make our program successful by providing the services listed within the budget. With your support, we can provide access to and empower the bodies and minds of a community who are uninsurance or underinsurance to access mental health services. We can aim to fill the gap to improve healthier food that is being placed on families' tables that are consumed into their bodies. Westside Project Helping Hand Inc. needs your help to build communities one resource at a time and the time begins with you and with us. No time for just talking about the problems yet it is time to take ACTION toward the problems. We need your help to impact measurable changes.
