Mission Statement
Perpetuating Hawaiian Canoe Paddling For Our Future Kai Oni Canoe & Athletic club was formed in 1952 by Joseph "Stew" Kalama and Max Kamaiopili and interested youth from Kailua, Oahu. In those days paddling was the primary activity but the club also participated in baseball, basketball, volleyball and various community events. Over the years, interest has focused solely on canoe paddling but plans are in the works to expand our programming once again. Our competitive canoe racing program runs from June through August and we compete in the Oahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association as well as the state level Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association. About This Cause
We are so proud to be one of the first canoe clubs to exist. Kai Oni Canoe & Athletic Club was founded in 1952 by Joseph "Stew" Kalama and Max Kamaiopili and their friends who were interested in canoe paddling. On August 18, 1953 the club was formally chartered and organized as a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit, EIN: 47-3528475. That same year, it was formally accepted into the Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association. Kai Oni Canoe Club has always been revered as the pioneers of the sports here but most especially the legacy it continues for canoe building, restoration and Hawaiian culture. We always welcome new paddlers to our organization and strive to provide the equipment and facilities necessary to continue what we do. It is no easy task to run a canoe club. We are faced with everyday challenges to provide for our members. Unlike some other clubs we don’t have the luxury of large membership, however, the past few years our club has seen a good growth of interest and we are now sustaining in our club size. Our club doesn’t have the funds to provide certain equipment for our members such as practice canoes, racing canoes, or paddles. We are always juggling which crews can use which canoes in practice, or always lending out paddles to one another, but we always do the best we can to provide. The coaches are always putting out their own money out of pocket to refurbish the Koa racing canoes, buying extra paddles, merchandise, tents, ropes, and other needed equipment. Members already pay dues and its to cover the cost of paddling insurance, a race t-shirt, and light maintenance for the year. Our club is growing and we want to be a successful club for many years to come. We are seeking out donations either in monetary fund, goods and or service. We would love to have our local stores be apart of our community and even if not a paddler, be a proud supporter of a great family sport, connected to a legacy of canoe builders from Kailua and Waimanalo, and of course a healthy lifestyle for our people. We are rebuilding our canoe shed in Waimanalo to help the restoration and functional use of fixing and building canoes. This will save our club time and money for the years to come.
