About This Cause

Lauren Bruner is one of the last crew members of the fabled battleship and cornerstone of American History, USS Arizona. At 98 years old, he has come to realize that his goal is to spend the remainder of his life honoring those men and crew members of USS Arizona with which he served. Of the 335 Arizona crew members who survived the attack on Pearl Harbor, less than 100 were aboard the ship when it was bombed, engulfed in a fireball, and sank. Lauren Bruner was one of those crew members, and according to Military Historians, was the Second to the Last to Leave USS Arizona, after being burned over 73% of his body, and receiving a Purple Heart for being wounded. The Lauren F. Bruner USS Arizona Memorial Foundation was co-established by one of the last survivors of the great battleship USS Arizona in order to pay honor to his crew for future generations. Mr. Bruner is now, through his foundation, working on what he believes to be one of the greatest gifts to America, which is in fact having a portrait drawn of each of the 1,512 crew members of the Arizona on the day it was attacked, bombed, and sunk on 7 December 1941. At the present time, all those who visit and have visited the USS Arizona Memorial have a deep sense of gratitude toward the men whose names are listed on the Memorial's Shrine Wall, which includes the entire crew of USS Arizona. Mr. Bruner believes that in order for future generations to never forget and always remember the sacrifices of his fellow crew members, nothing could be more important than to actually have a drawing of how each individual crew member looked on the morning of 7 December 1941 in their uniform of the day, which was called "Summer Whites." Once completed, these portraits will be made available to the National Park Service to share with those who come to Pearl Harbor to pay their respect. Your donation will be of aid in the task of researching crew members' photos, which with each year becomes more difficult to locate in any form, and once these are located, then portrait artists from across America, who have already begun this monumental task, will draw a crew member as he looked in order to share with future generations. Your help is greatly appreciated in helping one of the last survivors of USS Arizona realize what he calls his "Dream Gift to America." On behalf of Lauren F. Bruner, thank you for your consideration.
