AUTISM ANCHORING DOGS

Mission Statement

Providers of trained Anchoring Service Dogs to families with a child who bolts or "wanders and elopes" from a safe place or person. Without a deterrent, this behavior is life threatening, and often leads to injury or death. Many of these children are on the Autism Spectrum.

About This Cause

Autism Anchoring Dogs trains and places giant breed Service Dogs with children who suddenly run off. Many of these children clients are struggling with Autism. Nearly half the children with Autism wander or elope. This unpredictable behavior is life threatening to a child running from overwhelming sensory input. They have no sense of impending danger. The giant breed dogs we use in our Anchoring Service Dog program, Newfoundlands, Leonbergers, and the occasional St. Bernard, provide an active counter-weight to prevent a child from going much beyond a 6 feet radius of the adult Service Dog Handler -- usually the child's parent or caregiver. Our Anchoring Service Dogs are trained to sit and brace against the pull on their Service Vest. Parents with eloping children report: 65% fatal or near fatal accidents involving traffic, and 24% fatal or near fatal accidents involving drowning. This action our Anchoring Service Dogs take, of stopping elopement, can save a child's life. Our Anchoring Service Dogs also provide calming pressure upon command, and often promote self-calming by their gentle, benign presence during stressful circumstances for these children and their families. The Centers for Disease Control report families with children on the Autism Spectrum pay between $17,000-$60,000 in additional medical expenses. Each of our Anchoring Service Dogs cost over $25,000 to train and place with these families. Here at Autism Anchoring Dogs, some of our staff donate their time and subsidize the cost for each dog by $10,000. This brings the client's cost down to $15,000 for a fully trained Anchoring Service Dog. Please help us to bring the costs down even more. Our Founder and Executive Director lost her 8 year old son to an eloping incident in 2006 at Crater Lake National Park. He has never been found. She has dedicated her life to establishing Autism Anchoring Dogs to save these children and to keep them from harm. We truly are grateful for all your support. Feel free to contact AAD if you have questions about service dogs, autism spectrum disorder, or any of our gentle giants. Thank you for your consideration of Autism Anchoring Dogs!
