Mission Statement

unCommon Construction uses the build process to empower youth with the skills, network, resources, and experience to lead the workforce after high school or college.

About This Cause

unCommon Construction provides a unique, new pathway to de-stigmatize vocational education and provide a career pathway for high demand high wage jobs, like construction. Through unCommon's high school apprenticeship program, students from different schools apply to join a diverse team to earn hourly pay and school credit for building a house in a semester. Upon the sale of each home, apprentices also earn a matching "Equity Award" scholarship for further education, industry certifications or the tools they need for a full-time job. With 100+ hours of experience in a real-world learning environment per semester, apprentices develop skills and relationships that last as long as the house they use to do so. uCC excels at providing the youth with high-quality training and exposure to the construction industry and beyond. Through partnerships with local construction companies, training facilities, and colleges, we provide youth with the opportunity to more successfully transition from school to the workforce and/or post-secondary education. Need for volunteers to work alongside apprentices on full-day build events. uCC programming is augmented by the involvement of volunteer groups on Saturday build days. Volunteers give apprentices the opportunity to engage with different populations, forming diverse relationships and building cultural context, as well as supporting a fun, collaborative activity. Please visit http://www.uncommonconstruction.org/get-involved/ to apply to volunteer.
