Mission Statement
Because One Matters (BOMs) exists to positively influence the trajectory of foster children and young adults in underserved communities. Our vision is to provide hope, dignity, empowerment, mentorship, and economic opportunity to foster children and young adults in underserved communities.
About This Cause
We host birthday parties for foster children three times a year, April, Aug & November. The August party is typically a birthday party and back to school event. At this event, all kids are provided with school supplies. The November event is a combination of a birthday party and a Christmas celebration. At the November parties, children have the opportunity to take pictures with Santa Claus. At all parties, the birthday kids receive a birthday gift from their wish list, a new bookbag, and a book. The bookbag is for the kids to store their most precious items, and the book is to encourage reading. The goal of this program is to show them that they are loved and not forgotten Wrapped in Love (WIL) closet. Through our WIL closet, foster families and families from low income community can shop for new or like-new clothing items free of charge. We are committed to helping these children with personal items to help them in their new norm. Children entering the foster care system often leave home without the items they value, like their favorite teddy bear, blanket and other personal items. Children are placed into care while at school and do not have the opportunity to return home prior to being placed into care. In other cases, children are placed into the care at twilight evening hours and are rushed to pack limited contents into garbage bags before heading to foster care. We believe that Georgia’s children should be greeted with the love and dignity of a care package that they can call their own when they enter the foster care system. Therefore, our organization works to provide children entering foster care with a duffle bag containing essential items to increase comfort and security during their earliest days of placement. The work we do shows the children and young adults we serve that they matter, are loved, and their circumstances don’t define them. Or shop our Amazon Wishlist The goal of this program is to ensure that every child that is placed in foster care for the first time receives a duffle bag filled with essential items. We want to give grace and help restore dignity to children who have experienced the trauma of being removed from their loved ones and placed into stressful and unfamiliar environments. Home for the Holiday (H4) Program - We partnered with an organization called YESS (Youth Empowerment Support Services) to provide support to youths who are transitioning out of foster care. We do this by providing a full-course meals for both Thanksgiving and Christmas. In addition to meals, we also provide Christmas tree, decorations and a gift from their wish list. We also host various events throughout the year that encourages leadership, independence, etc. The goal of this program is to help provide the young adults that we serve a graceful transition into independent living. Because One Matters mentorship program is designed to provide a meaningful, professional, mentorship relationship (over a specified period of time) with students (from underserved communities) that guides them towards post-secondary college and career readiness. Our mentorship programs strive to close the gaps in equity and achievement for students in low-income/low-resourced circumstances; while producing actionable evidence and metrics to guide thought leadership, and inform changes in policy and practice, that will lead to improved learning and post-secondary achievement in the long run.
