About This Cause

Philadelphia Youth Basketball, Inc. (PYB) is a dynamic, non‐profit enterprise that was launched in the spring of 2015. Its mission is to create opportunities for young people, especially those from under‐resourced communities, to develop their potential as students, athletes, and responsible and engaged citizens. PYB has been established by a diverse and passionate group of leaders in the business, philanthropic, and basketball communities. The organizing team and founding board members of PYB have been motivated by the combined potential of basketball, leadership and character development, educational and college preparatory supports, family engagement, and skilled coaching and mentorship to have transformative power in the lives of kids and communities. In Philadelphia, like in many other American cities, achievement indicators for lower-income young people are alarmingly low. As schools continue to be underresourced and the economy has fewer jobs for individuals without post-secondary education, levels of underachievement and disengagement have increased. The high school dropout rate for lower-income kids in neighborhood schools continues to hover around 45%, and less than a quarter of the graduates enroll in a four‐year post-secondary experience. Large percentages of young people have been expelled from their high schools and instead are involved in the juvenile justice system. While many urban young people have high potential as leaders, innovators, and productive citizens, negative conditions and low expectations in many schools and communities are the norm. We believe we can empower young people to develop the skills and the identity to pursue excellence. In doing so, PYB will help change the narrative, the expectations, and the trajectory for many of the Philadelphia region’s most vulnerable boys and girls. The game of basketball has for decades been a culturally iconic force in Philadelphia, particular in the African‐American community. From city playgrounds, school gymnasiums, churches and recreation centers, to major college and professional venues, basketball has engaged and inspired people of all ages and walks of life. While its magnitude and prevalence is indisputable, it has not always been leveraged with young people to build habits and traits of sportsmanship, self‐control and civility, teamwork, and resiliency. PYB’s comprehensive programmatic approach, including a large presence of positive African‐American coaches, instructors, and senior staff leaders, will be a “game changer” for children and youth ages 4‐21. While “player development” will be emphasized, PYB’s fundamental purpose is the development of the whole person. Through the inspiration and generosity of some early stage donor/investors, the board and staff of PYB have begun building a professional organization and fundraising effort to construct a $25 million state-of-the-art, basketball‐based youth development center in the heart of North Philadelphia. This 120,000 square foot facility will have; - 8 indoor and 8 outdoor courts including a 2,000 seat indoor competition court; - An education wing with a library, classrooms, computer lab, and a community engagement center; - A health and wellness wing for strength and conditioning, and injury diagnosis, medical referral, and rehabilitation to be administered by the Rothman Institute of Jefferson University Hospital and Health System; - A healthy foods commissary with onsite food preparation and nutrition programs; - A Philadelphia Basketball Hall of Fame to commemorate the significant moments, teams, and individuals in the history of our City’s scholastic, collegiate, and professional basketball; and - An Executive Suite which is accessible to participating children, staff, and families The center will be located in the heart of North Philadelphia, in a predominantly lower-income, largely African-American community, with convenient access to kids and families coming via public transportation, car or on foot. This center will be the hub of PYB’s programs, along with a network of satellite sites at K‐12 schools, universities, recreation centers and playgrounds throughout Philadelphia and perhaps Chester and Camden. Simultaneously with the next three years of fundraising and construction, PYB has begun implementing a full‐scale pilot program in partnership with its Temple University, four neighboring pubic schools, and other synergistic partners to serve 40 girls and 40 boys. This program enables PYB to become real and relevant to kids and communities, while providing an opportunity to assess our on and off court program design elements, program delivery and school partnerships approach, program pricing and business model, data collection processes, and a range of operating systems. The outcomes that we are seeking to drive include, but are not limited to, improved grades, attendance, and behavior in school. For participants who participate with us through the fall of their 8th grade year, we will measure success by the percentage of participants (as compared to the average in their respective schools) who gain admission to a high school with a “college bound” program and culture, as listed in the Great Schools index of the Philadelphia Schools Partnership. The founding board of directors, the organizing team, a collection of professional services firms and individual experts, and a rapidly growing advisory committee have committed themselves to the success of Philadelphia Youth Basketball, and by extension, the success of the thousands of future young people who will join us as program participants. These individuals include recognized leaders in the sectors of education, youth development, basketball, business and law, entertainment, health care, philanthropy, and government. Moreover, PYB has active organizers and volunteers who are less well known in city‐wide circles but bring tremendous authenticity and credibility from their work in schools and communities. A transformational civic project of this magnitude is completed with a broad coalition of stakeholders and advocates. Building the center and organization of Philadelphia Youth Basketball is no exception. What is unique, however, is the breadth and diversity of supporters who are coming together to make this initiative a reality. These people share three core values: 1. A belief in creating opportunities for all children to reach their potential 2. A belief in empowering lower-‐income families and communities 3. A belief in the power of basketball and positive coaches in the lives of kids When the listing of people, families, foundations, corporations, and governmental entities that contribute to the creation of our center and programs is memorialized on a large plaque in the lobby of our center, on individual bricks on the external walkway, and on the various academic and athletic spaces of the center, we are confident that these PYB pioneers will represent the most diverse slice of our community of any youth‐centered facility in the history of our region.
