About This Cause

What began as a one-day camp has transformed into the Sound Mind Sound Body Foundation, a 501(c)3 organization providing year round programs for student-athletes. The Sound Mind Sound Body Foundation mission is to improve the number of high school students in under-served communities that are on track to graduate high school and eligible for college admission. Sound Mind Sound Body (SMSB) accomplishes this mission by using athletics as a vehicle to teach youth to exert equal amounts of energy to academics, life skills and character. Our aim is to create well-rounded students that understand the SMSB formula for SUCCESS is STUDENT + ATHLETE + SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY + SOUND DECISION MAKING = SUCCESS. In the summer of 2004, 100 young men and their parents attended the first Sound Mind Sound Body (SMSB) Football Academy and heard about the importance of academics and life skills, while under the watchful eye of college coaches. In 15 years, the SMSB Football Academy has expanded to over 10 locations including Washington, D.C., Tampa, Atlanta, Houston, and Los Angeles. Out of SMSB Football Academy grew, Maximum Exposure (Max Ex), our 7v7 travel team is comprised of top players who compete locally and nationally in 7v7 tournaments. From the SMSB Football Academy and Max Ex grew the Sound Mind Sound Body Foundation. In the last two years, the growth of SMSB has been substantial. In 2017, the SMSB Headquarters opened inside the Mack Athletic Complex. The SMSB Headquarters is a center for comprehensive football student-athlete development for under-served youth in Metro Detroit. SMSB Project100, a 23-week long college readiness program for students who play football, began in the fall of 2017. SMSB Project100 keeps Metro Detroit youth off the streets on the weekends, in a safe environment, around caring mentors and offers Detroit youth a unique experience. SMSB Project100 participants receive 100 hours of athletic training, mentoring and academic readiness. Academic readiness includes leadership, goal setting, self-esteem, communication, teamwork, perseverance, health, college readiness, and financial literacy. After academic readiness, the student-athletes begin the training portion of the weekly program. December 2017, SMSB held its first “Day of Inspiration” featuring internationally renowned motivational speaker, Dr. Eric Thomas and its first Michigan Invitational camp at Ford Field. Over 500 youth participated in the events during these two days. In 2018, the two events were held again and a third day of combine testing was added at SMSB Headquarters. Again, over 500 youth participated in the event spanning three days. In 2018, SMSB held its first Spring Break College Tour sponsored by UAW-Ford. During that week along the eastern seaboard, the 100 young men visited 11 colleges, visited nine historic sites and museums, and attend three camps. In 2019, 100 young men toured 13 colleges in the south, visited four historic sites and museums and attend two camps. Our growth has been incredible and it we do it for the youth, their families, and our community. Since 2004, Sound Mind Sound Body remains committed to HOPE, EXPOSURE, READINESS, & SCHOLARSHIPS.
