Mission Statement
Girls Who Invest (GWI) is a non-profit organization dedicated to transforming the investment management industry by attracting and advancing women investors, changemakers, and leaders.
About This Cause
Girls Who Invest (GWI) is a non-profit organization transforming the investment management industry by attracting and advancing the next generation of women investors and leaders. We are changing the face of investing through education, mentoring, internships, and a supportive, motivated community and have reached over 2,500 scholars in our first eight years. GWI enables college students - who identify as women or gender non-binary - to explore investment management careers through its tuition-free educational program. We believe, and research shows, that creating space for women investors unlocks unique and previously excluded perspectives that lead to higher performance. For many women in our community, it is also a life-changing opportunity to shatter glass ceilings and gain upward mobility that can have ripple effects on their families and communities. Our vision is for 30% of the world’s investable capital to be managed by women by 2030. Our Signature Programs GWI runs highly competitive, application-based programs - the Summer Intensive (SIP) and Online Intensive (OIP) Programs - that solicit applications from first and second-year college students of all majors. Since our first program in 2016, we have seen exceptional growth in interest and popularity with over 2,700 applicants for our 2024 programs, nearly 40% YoY increase! Our scholars have come from 49 states and over 200 different colleges & universities, studying across nearly 100 majors and disciplines. We look for students who will be successful in the investment industry beyond their current area of study, grades or test scores. We value passion, intellectual curiosity, character, and life experience. Summer Intensive Program GWI’s flagship program is our Summer Intensive Program (SIP), combining a 4-week in-residence academic training led by top university professors with a guaranteed 7-week paid frontline investing internship at one of 120+ leading investment management firms during their sophomore year. Through rigorous classes and project work, our carefully selected cohort of 200+ promising scholars learn about core finance and investment concepts, including financial modeling and Bloomberg terminal training. Our program takes place at the Wharton School of UPenn. Room & board are fully covered by GWI. GWI leads an equity-focused model for its sophomore internship program which matches partner firms with scholars based on skill set, coursework, asset class preference, and ambition. But more importantly, it disrupts traditional screening practices that may lead to unconscious bias and the exclusion of outstanding talent that comes from non-traditional backgrounds. Online Intensive Program The Online Intensive Program (OIP) is self-directed and asynchronous, allowing independent learners the opportunity to master core finance & investing fundamentals at their own pace through modules provided by Wharton Online, CFA Investment Foundations, and Wall Street Prep (85+ hrs total). OIP scholars are assigned study pods and can attend professional development workshops, panels, and regional convenings. Scholars who complete the rigorous OIP program join our GWI Alumni community and gain access to our Career Institute. Since 2018, OIP has allowed GWI to exponentially expand our reach and has grown 7x just in the last few years from 55 scholars in 2019 to over 400 scholars in 2023. GWI Alumni Career Institute Our GWI alumni community has grown to over 2,500 members strong. Launched in 2022, the Alumni Career Institute focuses on the long-term retention and advancement of our alumni in asset management and provides professional development at all stages by focusing on career advisory, community building, and transformational connections. GWI Alumni have also proven to be our greatest asset for scholar recruitment into our programs and general brand awareness through their advocacy on their campuses and communities. In addition, many active alumni pay it forward by recruiting early career alumni for full-time roles at their firms, and over 100 serve annually as mentors to our scholars. Our Impact Measurements Footprint. In only eight years, the GWI community has grown from 30 to over 2,500 Alumni and increases each year by over 500 new members who complete our signature education programs. Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. GWI is deeply committed to advancing all individuals from a variety of backgrounds, including communities that have historically faced barriers to entry and promotion. Our cumulative Alumni community reflects 69% of women of color. Furthermore, the 2023 SIP class of 200+ women and gender non-binary individuals represent our most diverse cohort to date with 75% people of color, 34% historically underrepresented communities, 23% first-generation college students, and 40% that identify from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Eliminating barriers to access. Partner firms work with GWI to optimize their DEI efforts, and our data, including on compensation, helps improve practices and close equity gaps. Among our 100+ partner firms, nearly one-third have adopted relocation/housing stipends for internships in part as a result of our advocacy. GWI also provided need-based financial assistance to nearly 50% of this year’s internship cohort to subsidize out-of-pocket expenses, such as travel and short-term housing. Long-Term Industry Retention. We are proud to report that over 75% of GWI Alumni who are working full-time remain in finance. Our collective impact is only possible with the support of partner firms that host our scholars for sophomore internships, prioritize hiring Alumni candidates, and act as thought partners to GWI on their long-term retention and advancement goals. Generating interest in finance. To build awareness and inspire early interest, we opened our Online Intensive Program to first-year college students. After completing OIP, over 90% of all participants in 2023 indicated they were more interested in pursuing a career in finance.
