Mission Statement

Manitos ("Little Hands") is a New York City-based charity that aids children with cancer in Paraguay, concentrating on the poorest of the poor, those hoping to receive treatment at the National Cancer Institute outside Asuncion.

About This Cause

Manitos (“Little Hands”) is a small New York City-based charity dedicated to aiding children with cancer in Paraguay. It was created by Claire Bigelow Nalley and Richard Nalley in 2007 in honor of their daughter, Emily Bigelow Nalley, who died of complications from lymphoma in 2006. We concentrate our efforts on the National Cancer Institute (INT) outside Asuncion, which serves Paraguay's poorest of the poor, and is chronically short of medicines, ports, testing equipment and basically everything else we take for granted when a child checks into a cancer hospital in the U.S. In conjunction with our in-country partners at the San Peregrino Foundation (who work on the hospital grounds trying to find drugs and funds for the children, day by day, case by case) we were able to buy a plot of land adjacent to the hospital and refurbish an abandoned building on the site as a shelter. Opened this year—on time and on budget—the Posada Emily is a haven offering dignity, security, beds and meals (we serve about 3,000 meals a month) to families and children undergoing treatment. Many have travelled from far away and essentially had to fend for themselves—some were previously sleeping on the ground. In return for accommodation, the parents in residence help prepare the meals and maintain the Posada. Every dollar donated goes a very long way in Paraguay, and aids children and families in the deepest need.
