Mission Statement

Synth Library Portland (formerly S1) is an all-volunteer, collectively run arts organization that supports a diverse community of artists, providing access to the tools of electronic music so that our community members can experiment, learn, and create.

About This Cause

S1 was founded in 2014 as a venue for music, performance and visual art. Our physical space served as a community hub for interaction between artists, educators and students. In November of 2020 we had to close our space due to the impacts of Covid-19. We have since pivoted to a lending library program and regular workshops hosted in partner venues around Portland. Through the lending program we are able to loan out our extensive collection of music gear through low-cost monthly memberships. We regularly partner with other music-education-focused non-profits in Portland, such as Ethos Music Center, My Voice Music, and Roots and Beats, to share our gear and teach workshops. In the summer we host the free, outdoor concert series Modular on the Spot, where Synth Library members and other musicians from the community perform open-air electronic music shows for any and all who want to come. Our working board and volunteers donate their time, energy, and knowledge to keep our organization running. They bring skill sets spanning audio and video synthesis, synth manufacturing, event production, graphic design, web development, creative coding, non-profit management, and community organizing. They also coordinate workshops and teach in areas of their own expertise. Workshops are open to the general public, not just members, and we provide youth-specific programming through partner organizations. We create inclusive curricula that are accessible to those with no previous experience.
