Mission Statement

We strive to improve the well-being of rural Ugandans by providing affordable access to primary healthcare and related services.

About This Cause

Bulamu Healthcare (www.bulamuhealthcare.org) is a US registered non-profit that provides primary medical care to rural poor families in Uganda. Bulamu has developed a uniquely cost-effective service delivery model, operating week-long “pop-up” medical camps that bring modern medical diagnosis and treatment to Ugandans lacking access to the most basic healthcare services. The need for these camps is proven by the dramatic growth in patients served. In 2018 we have already treated 25,880 patients at our three week-long medical camps, a 153% growth rate over prior year, at an average cost of $5.75 per patient served. Our April camp set a new record, treating 11,787 patients using a temporary staff of 320 workers, which included Ugandan doctors, dentists and nurses trained in Western medicine, along with support staff and Peace Corps volunteers, who provide public health workshops. The concentration of patients at our medical camps has attracted an ecosystem of other African NGOs, who utilize our platform to provide free patient services in their areas of specialization, such as immunization, HIV testing, cervical cancer screening, and antenatal instruction, because it is such a cost-effective way to accomplish their own missions. We partner with the Ugandan Ministry of Health (MOH), who turn their health center campuses and staffs over to us for the duration of each medical camp. We call these “SuperCamps,” because we treat more patients in a week than those same facilities are treating the other 51 weeks of the year combined. This year we are leveraging our medical camp model with four new initiatives: 1. The Bulamu Angel Program makes the arrangements and covers the cost of patients who need referral to a hospital for imaging or surgical treatment; 2. The Bulamu Patient Follow-up Program, building on our proprietary electronic medical records (EMR) system, uses MOH village health workers to follow-up with patients in their homes in case additional care is needed; 3. The Bulamu Clinic Management program is introducing performance standards that will permit MOH health centers to become Bulamu Gold Medical Certified Clinics by raising their service levels to acceptable levels; and 4. A permanent Women's Health Center located at a government referral hospital will provide cervical cancer screening in a remote region where such services are not currently available. Because of Bulamu’s strong relationship with the local district governments who partner with us in hosting each camp, along with the attendant support required from the MOH, we are uniquely positioned to reform from within Uganda’s primary healthcare system, which is built on 2700 government-operated local clinics. Over time, we believe we can eliminate the need for pop-up medical camps by making comparable quality health services available at these existing MOH facilities year-round. Our rapid growth and ambitious strategy has outstripped our historical funding sources and now requires that we approach larger foundations who are moved by the cost-effectiveness of our basic model and the potential for systemic change represented by our new directions.
