Mission Statement
Although Palo Alto is considered a wealthy community, each year about 10% of the student body is considered low-income and comes from Palo Alto, East Palo Alto, Menlo Park, or is experiencing homelessness. Rise Together Education (RTE), an all-volunteer nonprofit organization, is dedicated to improving college graduation rates by providing support and financial resources to low-income Palo Alto High School students who have been accepted to 4-year colleges or 2-year community colleges. We currently provide scholarships of up to $3,000 per academic year for up to four years and one-on-one mentorship for as long as the students need to earn their bachelor's degrees.
About This Cause
Operational since 2016, Rise Together Education has awarded need-based scholarships to nearly 100 Palo Alto High School graduates to attend community colleges and 4-year institutions. Our scholars have overcome significant financial and personal hardships to excel academically. Over 85% are first-generation college students and are BIPOC. Nationally, 89% of first-generation college students drop out within 6 years. However, in addition to financial support, we provide one-on-one mentorships to our scholars. We have successfully helped dozens of students earn their bachelor's degrees and are currently supporting nearly 60 students. One of our students, David Wei (SJSU Class of 2023) remarked that, "At first when I heard during my senior year [at Paly] that I was a part of RTE, I thought great, I will have scholarship money! But by the time I got to my second year of courses, and with Covid isolation, it was really RTE's mentorship, resources and guidance to advocate for myself that got me through.
