Mission Statement

Baby Rhino Rescue funds the rescue, care (emotional, physical, and medical), protection and rehabilitation of orphan rhinos in a safe sanctuary in South Africa. These rhino orphans are the result of a massive surge in poaching over the past 10 years. Often nursing mothers are poached because they move slowly. They may also be pregnant so that frequently, three animals are killed when one is poached. As eco engineers that affect the ecosystems where they live, this keystone species is headed for extinction unless drastic steps are taken to save them. It is our mission that working together, we can save the rhino from extinction.

About This Cause

Rhinos have been on this planet for 55 million years! These exceptional creatures are now being increasingly poached for their horns by sophisticated international criminal syndicates. Rhinos die from severe wounds inflicted when not only the horn, but part of the face is removed by poachers. Rhino calves depend on their mothers for protection and nourishment for 2-3 years. These orphan calves suffer extreme stress watching their mothers being poached. Unless we take drastic action, this unique, iconic species could become extinct within the next 10 years. Recognizing this potential loss of an iconic species, Baby Rhino Rescue was formed by a group of passionate individuals who strongly believe that miracles are possible when people come together with passion, with pro-activity, and with vision. We work with real people on the front lines: the rangers in the bush, the vets treating the injured orphan rhinos, and the sanctuary experts caring for and rehabilitating these severely traumatized rhino babies who cannot survive without their mothers. Initially housed in crates which serve as a safe, womb-like enclosure, rhino orphans are gradually moved into a boma, a separate enclosure where they are introduced to other orphan rhinos. As they become more independent, they are taken out for a few hours into a large natural bush environment to feed and to be together in safety. They are watched over constantly by armed guards, and more recently, trained dogs and their handlers. Our long term vision is for all these orphan rhinos to have a future in the wild, where they can breed in safety. Building safe strongholds in native bush is the solution to their future. Working together, Baby Rhino Rescue is taking steps to ensure the next generation of rhinos in the wild.
