Mission Statement

HER Resiliency Center is a non-profit organization that helps vulnerable young women ages 18 to 25 with the support, skills, and resources they need to make positive decisions and thrive. Through mentoring, workshops, and the support of dedicated and highly trained staff, HER gives young women a path to independence and a different life.

About This Cause

The young women served by HER Resiliency Center (HER) are among the most vulnerable communities in Washington, DC and Baltimore, MD. The majority of young women served most identified as having aged-out of foster care with no supports, or have been involved in other the child welfare or juvenile justice system. As a result of this background or that of a neglectful home in which poverty is rampant, all of the young women have experienced at least one of the following: trauma, drug or alcohol addiction, domestic violence and abuse, and sexual exploitation including: sex trafficking, commercial sex work and/or survival sex. Without trauma focused holistic support, these young women will fall further through the cracks, resulting in incarceration, lack of higher education and earning potential, homelessness and even death. HER is all too familiar with these desperate situations. Through the use of trauma-informed principles, HER has created a low barrier organization for young women in DC and Baltimore to get the support they need before they enter full-blown crisis. HER is here to serve young women who want and need to change their lives; there are no other qualifications that participants need to meet before being embraced by the program’s community. Once ready, the young women are given the time they deserve to learn new skill-sets and behaviors for meeting their needs. This will occur when the young women are given a safe, non-judgmental environment on which they can depend, and when they are given healthy options for developing a positive network of peers. Through HER’s skill building workshops and pairing with a mentor, the participants have the opportunity to build their network in a structured capacity. Seeing the success of their peers lets them learn healthy ways for meeting their needs. The young women of HER Resiliency Center begin their journey through participation in a comprehensive assessment to identify their immediate and long-term needs as well as their strengths. This information is used to develop a personalized treatment plan that outlines goals for personal wellness, education, employment, and housing. The young women -- we call "peers" because we are all on a peer level -- are guided step-by-step through the process of achieving goals by HER's Strengths & Skills Facilitators (case management staff). The young women simultaneously participate in skill-building groups where they learn strategies for increasing their chances of success while fostering relationships with peers to increase their healthy network of support. Finally, each young woman is paired with a mentor who provides her with the perspective of someone who has overcome similar challenges. This combination of services, delivered in a safe, non-judgmental environment, provides young women with the support necessary to navigate barriers and maintain the motivation necessary to achieve self-sufficiency.
