About This Cause
Trans Legal Aid Clinic of Texas (“TLACT”), a Texas 501(c)(3) non-profit organization assists trans and gender-expansive people born in Texas, or living in Texas, with obtaining accurate, legal identifying documents that reflect who they truly are. TLACT’s goal is to help every trans and gender-expansive Texan “be legally you.” TLACT helps people through its clinics, which are held virtually so that anyone, anywhere, can access our services from a phone, computer, or tablet, as well as in person at a local LGBTQ+ community center in Houston. TLACT has twenty clinics currently scheduled for 2024 and will likely host even more. We believe that we offer the most frequent and consistent help for this work in the entire state. In 2023, with no staff, TLACT provided help to over 350 adults and minors with their name and/or gender marker correction. Participants are not required to meet income, asset, or other qualifying criteria. If you need help getting your name and/or gender marker corrected on your identifying documents and were born in Texas or live in Texas, TLACT’s volunteer attorneys will assist you. TLACT provides drafts of legal documents for court filings, detailed instructions about the court process and the various processes that follow, instructional videos, and financial support to individuals navigating the name and/or gender marker correction process. With identification that reflects who they truly are, people are empowered to better navigate the world, safely, securely, and prosperously. With an ID that says she is male, a trans woman may not feel comfortable accessing medical care, be able to secure a job that does not require engagement in risky sexual behavior, or have the ability to obtain stable housing. Research has clearly established that correct identification documents improve the health and life outcomes of trans and gender-expansive people.
