Mission Statement
Birthright AFRICA inspires youth and young adults of African descent ages 13 - 30 to explore their cultural roots and legacy of innovation as a birthright (free) within the U.S. and nations in Africa. In collaboration with partners, we aim to instill pride, enhance confidence, and spark the creativity of Birthright AFRICA Scholars to fulfill their leadership and entrepreneurial aspirations. Birthright AFRICA is creating the next generation of global leaders and entrepreneurs that are proud of their African heritage, confident in their innovative aspirations and connected to the African continent. About This Cause
Birthright AFRICA is committed to providing a free educational trip to Africa for every youth and young adult of African descent ages 13 – 30 in the United States. Formed in 2015, as the umbrella organization for the movement, Birthright AFRICA supports collaborative partners to develop heritage-based leadership programs that inspire Scholars to draw pride, confidence, and creativity from exploration of their cultural roots and legacy of innovation in the U.S. and Africa. Scholars explore cultural sites, museums, universities and innovation hubs with Black leaders and entrepreneurs to learn the historic and present-day resilience and brilliance of their heritage. To date, 101 Birthright Scholars have received their life-changing birthright experience in collaboration with 10 Education Partners (high schools, colleges, and community-based orgs around the U.S.) since the 2017 pilot program with the City University of New York (CUNY). Scholars explore local and national Black/African heritage in the U.S. prior to the culminating global trip to African nations including Ghana, Kenya and South Africa. Currently, over 27,000 young people of African descent are registered as Birthright Scholars with access to pre-travel virtual programs to explore their ancestral roots and legacy while awaiting referral to apply to a Partner Birthright Program. Only 2% of US managers, leaders, and entrepreneurs are of African descent, 6% of college students that study abroad are black and only 4% travel to Africa. To address this gap in education, diversity and talent in collaboration with our partners, Birthright AFRICA is creating the next generation of global leaders and entrepreneurs that are proud of their African heritage, confident in their innovative aspirations and connected to the African continent. After completing the program, 100% of Birthright Alumni say it was life-changing and 98% say they have more resources, clarity, and belief in themselves to pursue their career and life goals. With continued mentoring and network access post-travel through the Birthright AFRICA Ecosystem, many Birthright Alumni have now graduated college, entered their careers - including at Fortune 500 firms, and are on the path to fulfilling their leadership and entrepreneurship aspirations as envisioned by diversity and inclusion efforts in our society. We are committed to ensuring the Birthright AFRICA experience is a part of our culture to transform the future of the diaspora for generations to come.
