To empower DC area youth, school staff, parents and care givers by strengthening their knowledge, skills, and attitudes to heal from childhood trauma that can disrupt learning through our Excel with SEL Social Emotional Learning Curriculum and STEM education.
About This Cause
Fly By Nature Foundation is a DC-based 501(c)(3) Non-Profit youth serving Organization that empowers DC area youth, school staff, parents and caregivers by strengthening their knowledge, skills, and attitudes to heal from childhood trauma that can disrupt learning through our Excel with SEL Social Emotional Learning curriculum and STEM education. Dream & Steam Academy was birthed during the pandemic and has been running coding & robotics after-school programming at the Seed School of Washington DC. This is a College Preparatory High School in Ward 7 of Southeast DC. One of our previous Seniors is now in her Freshman year majoring in Computer Science Engineering at American University. Our graduating senior this year has accepted a scholarship at Kent State University and will be majoring in Computer Science Engineering. Program Mission: Our mission is to provide access to STEAM education to marginalized youth in the DC area by arming the students with 21st Century skills, college, career reediness, internship opportunities and life skills to thrive in this evolving and competitive marketplace. "I hate math" is a common response for both adults and young people. Math anxiety is well-documented. This was the motivation to start our 2nd program Dream & S.T.E.A.M Academy. A great deal of STEM content is quantitative, so this anxiety also carries over to the other areas of STEM. STEM jobs cover video games to building robots. STEM careers can be collaborative, creative and fun. We provide after school programming to DC area youth as an entry point to equitable STEAM education to advance out of poverty and reach their full potential. We create safe spaces for our students to feel comfortable being their authentic selves without judgement using a student centered approach. Dream & S.T.E.A.M Academy is Fly By Nature Foundation's entry point to learning science, technology, engineering, arts and math that can lead to endless career and entrepreneurship opportunities. Our Alignments and Approaches: Fly By Nature Foundation takes holistic approaches on how we engage with youth that participate in our programming. We offer support and resources for parents and caregivers to help them navigate through the obstacles and challenges they face. We create safe spaces for youth to be their authentic selves without any judgement. We want to help improve school culture with the assistance of our Mental Health Professional partners and our Co-Flier Facilitators. We value the voice, ideas and concerns of your youth and give them the opportunity for student led activities apart of our programming.
