Mission Statement
CREA elevates rural Nicaraguans and their communities through literacy and learning.
About This Cause
The Nicaraguan Education Resource Center (CREA) is a US 501c3 non-profit organization, recognized by the Nicaraguan government. In Spanish, CREA means both “create” and “believe” embodying our vision of Minds Wide Open. Anyone can engage in CREA programming and, through education, reading, and support, they can dream beyond what they have ever imagined. CREA developed to make a positive, long lasting impact in the lives of children, youth, and adults in rural Nicaragua. According to the World Bank, rural Nicaraguans complete an average of just 4.9 years of schooling, making it nearly impossible for adults to provide educational support for their children. Additionally, access to books and effective learning materials are a luxury that few can afford given the poverty where CREA operates. The ability to read, comprehend, and process information in addition to the completion of formal education provides opportunities for a better life. CREA’s mission is to inspire rural Nicaraguans through literacy and education. Our three integrated Initiatives of Library Services, Youth Development, and Academic Success provide programming that includes educational and learning-focused efforts specifically targeting rural, economically disadvantaged children and youth ages 6 months to 25 years old. CREA’s Initiatives and programs have been created by CREA’s local community staff members in response to the high needs of the communities. The Initiatives operate in collaboration with local community leaders, schools, and organizations providing a strong community base for the success of CREA’s efforts. All programming encourages participants to become life-long, literate leaders of change in their communities.
