Mission Statement

San Francisco School of Needlework and Design (SNAD) promotes through education, art experiences, exhibitions and outreach, the heritage craft of hand embroidery.

About This Cause

San Francisco School of Needlework and Design's (SNAD) mission is to provide educational and artistic experiences using hand embroidery to students from beginner through professional levels. As a heritage craft, hand embroidery, practiced across the globe from the earliest societies and cultures, faces extinction. SNAD provides programming to a diverse student population in a variety of techniques across global cultural borders. We offer weekly programs at no cost, classes beginning at $5, and scholarships in all of our more advanced courses. We house a unique library with over 2400 volumes, including antiquarian sources, covering history, fashion, art and embroidery techniques. SNAD also maintains a collection of embroidered textiles used as teaching aids and inspiration. SNAD is uniquely placed as the only such school in the United States, where, women's education in the colonial through victorian periods importantly included needlework education. We aim to support today's students in enjoying the meditative benefits of handwork, be it through visible mending on their own clothes or creating the heirlooms of tomorrow to pass on to future generations.
