Mission Statement
Facilitate better access to menstrual products to individuals in need; advocate for equal and tax-free access to these essential products; and raise awareness of period poverty by leveraging voices around the country.
About This Cause
The Period Project is headquartered in Greenville, SC, and serves communities throughout the country. We have active chapters in SC, NC, Georgia, Maryland, Texas with pockets of grassroots volunteers throughout other regions. Period Poverty is a problem that affects menstruators of all ethnicities and all communities. Period products are NOT covered by government grocery assistance programs like Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) programs. While many people are unaware of the existence of period poverty, the 2017 Always Confidence & Puberty Survey reports that nearly one in five have either left school early or missed school entirely because they did not have access to period products. Public spaces inconsistently address period poverty. People experiencing homelessness must take extra precautions; they often don’t know if there will be space to wash at night or if shelter staff will be generous with pad and tampon distribution. Incarcerated women, who account for 13% of the overall imprisoned population, also suffer from limited and inconsistent access to period products. As one Spartanburg High School student told us, “Sometimes I get my period at school. And it’s unexpected. I don’t like when people know that I’m on my period. Because it’s embarrassing. Tampons and pads are expensive. Sometimes I hesitate about asking my parents for money for tampons and pads. I feel like if I didn’t go through so many . . . that would help a lot. Sometimes I just don’t ask. It’s hard.” Our period packs ensure that girls from low-income families miss less instruction time and gain peace of mind that they can face the school day with dignity. - Funds are needed for organization operations. - Volunteers are needed to host period packing parties. - In-kind donations accepted: Menstrual Products and wipes Visit our website for details and to sign up for our e-newsletter. www.PeriodProject.org
