Mission Statement
Friends of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. School (aka MLK Friends) is the nonprofit parent group for the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. School in Cambridge, MA. Our group conducts activities and raises funds to strengthen and celebrate our school community with the goal of creating a community where people feel connected, supported and excited about learning. We work with the school to foster the schools core values of family involvement, confidence and self-worth, achievement, learning as a process and social responsibility.
About This Cause
Friends of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. School (aka MLK Friends) is the nonprofit parent group for the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. School in Cambridge, MA. Our group conducts activities and raises funds to strengthen and celebrate our school community with the goal of creating a community where people feel connected, supported and excited about learning. MLK Friends works with the school community to meet the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. School’s school mission and to foster our School’s Core Values summarized below. We foster the core value of Family Involvement through outreach to current families, funding events and conducting outreach to new families. MLKFriends fosters the core value of Confidence and Self Worth through Funding of school t-shirts so children proudly identify with the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. School and assisting with basic needs including books from the book fair, Weekend backpacks – funded through Project Bread, food pantry program, new underwear at school nurses office (for accidents), and gently used outerwear such as coats, gloves. We foster the school value of Achievement through: Facilitating adequate support for students' learning and achieving in the target language, Chinese and in other subjects such as math, writing; Working together with the Community School Program; Helping to assess needs of students and families; Helping to fund afterschool enrichment scholarships in coordination with MLKing school, MLKing afterschool, or community school. MLK Friends fosters the school value Learning as a Process through: funding field trips to expose students to cultural and academic enrichment, supporting the yearly school talent show to allow students to demonstrate their interests beyond the classroom; hosting annual MLK book fair to help students develop reading skills. We foster the school value of Social Responsibility through coordinating appropriate volunteer activities such as school team in Walk for Hunger to benefit local food pantries, and the Charles River Cleanup, to celebrate Earth Day by cleaning the banks of a local river.
