The goal is to offer these at the highest artistic performance level for the musical enjoyment and the cultural and educational benefit to the residents in the region, to further attract growing audiences by programming of the great classical masterpieces The leadership of our music director, with over thirty five years of orchestra conducting experience, together with dedicated musicians, assure a high musical performance quality. The Board of Directors of the Poway Symphony Orchestra Foundation is committed to fully supporting the operations and financial needs of the orchestra in order to meet its goals. Organization Description The Poway Symphony Orchestra is a semi-professional community orchestra with a “mission to make live classical symphonic music accessible to audiences and fellow performers of communities and towns of North County Inland for their musical enjoyment and cultural and educational enrichment”. To that end the Orchestra currently presents three concerts each year in the Poway Center for the Performing Arts, a centrally located venue and our home base. While the orchestra has existed for many years with humble beginnings as a class of the Poway Unified School District/Adult School, its tremendous growth has taken off in 2014 when a music director with over 35 years of experience in orchestra conducting was appointed and more attention given to better community recognition. The conductor’s musical and artistic leadership has assured that the orchestra is now performing at the high quality artistic level which our audiences have come to expect. In October 2015 the Poway Symphony Orchestra Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization was created and incorporated in Poway with the sole purpose of supporting the orchestra by raising the necessary funds and assuring its operations. A number of volunteers from the community, convinced of the cultural need in the community for a full size orchestra undertook to form that organization. The Poway Symphony Orchestra provides the opportunity for all to enjoy locally live performances of the great classical masterpieces of symphonic music The members of the Board of Directors of the Poway Symphony Orchestra Foundation are fully committed to continue building this cultural asset for the benefit of the communities in a wide region north of San Diego where an estimated 300,000 residents make their home. By programming engaging classical masterpieces and inviting guest renown artists the orchestra has achieved wide recognition and increasing audiences. This has recently resulted in near or full sell out concerts at the 800 seat capacity auditorium. Prior to Covid, our concerts had been increasingly successful, culminating in the November 2019 performance of Beethovens’ 9th Symphony before a sold out audience. That momentum was interrupted by the cancellation of five concerts over a two year period, but fully regained with “The Music is Back” program of November 21, 2021. fFor the current season three concerts are planned. The intent is to augment that by offering a fourth concert in a future season. This could possibly be a pops summer concert or a holiday concert. Such a program should appeal to a different stratum of music lovers, which may benefit the community. In our efforts towards an educational outreach we have budgeted for future scholarships to students in the music departments for the local high schools. In addition, we will offer free attendance to dress rehearsals for music students. The orchestra musicians come from all walks of life. Some are music educators, others with music degrees have careers in other fields and offer their time and talent. All share the joy of playing music and dedication to the orchestra. Some professional musicians are needed to strengthen the various orchestra sections and to perform the works of the great composers. The goal of the Music Director and Board of Directors toward the highest quality performance level will require a gradual increase of professional participation in the future. Whereas good programming and renown soloists do attract growing audiences, it remains necessary to also further spread the word by effective marketing and publicity. This intense activity continues to be implemented by promotion in the local press and several other outlets, social media presence and regular mailings to our patrons base. The Poway Center for the Performing Arts is the ideal venue for the orchestra’s concerts. The Center is owned and operated by the City of Poway. The Poway Symphony Orchestra rents the Center for its concerts and for two rehearsal prior to each concert. Other rehearsals are held at a school facility. For each performance the orchestra pays various fees which include rental fees, personnel fees and a ticket service fee. These costs are quite significant and are expected to increase in the future. It is believed, however, that the benefits of performing at this local venue outweigh these costs. Hence the Poway Symphony Orchestra is working towards achieving the status of “Orchestra in Residence” at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts in order to fully commit to our mission for the benefit of the community. It is fully realized that these musical and operational goals can only be reached with sufficient fundraising efforts. The PSO Foundation continues to actively search for additional sources of funding. Certain grants have been received from local government agencies and from a private family foundation. Fundraising campaigns among our patrons have contributed valuable revenues well. Net ticket sales, after all costs at the Center are paid, constitute another source of some income. The Board of Directors, Music Director, musicians, and a growing support organization of collaborators, are motivated to make the Poway Symphony Orchestra flourish in order to fully benefit the communities in the region in accordance with our mission.
