About This Cause
We approach organizing as a hopeful exercise that builds common ground among our communities. Organizing is how we survive, but it is challenging when our communities struggle with poverty, cannot afford secure and safe housing, face language barriers and harassment on our streets and in our schools, and have an inherent distrust of and fear of backlash from government institutions. We identify the policies and systems that harm us and work with our communities to address the issues our communities face by pursuing systemic solutions. Attending to and addressing the immediate needs of community members is the first step toward engaging them in PANA’s broader advocacy and movement work. Over the next five years we will continue to: Provide direct, high quality, free legal assistance on immigration, housing, and benefits issues faced by asylum seekers, refugees, and BAMEMSA communities. Our philosophy is that no one leaves without some kind of support or referral. Respond to immediate needs and crises faced by our communities – whether it’s a humanitarian crisis at the border or the expiration of protections for renters, we respond to emergent challenges our communities face. Identify and learn about systemic issues affecting our communities. Work with community leaders to develop Know Your Rights training and legal clinics to ensure communities are armed with an understanding of their rights and the resources available should those rights be threatened. Identify and refer potential impact litigation to trusted partners.
