The LGBT Asylum Project

SAN FRANCISCO, California, 94114 United States

Mission Statement

The LGBT Asylum Project is the only San Francisco nonprofit organization exclusively dedicated to providing accessible legal representation for LGBT asylum seekers who are fleeing persecution due to their sexual orientation, gender identity and/or HIV status.

About This Cause

The LGBT Asylum Project was founded by two San Francisco-based attorneys, Okan Sengun and Brooke Westling, who identified a critical need for high-quality pro-bono representation among vulnerable immigrant populations escaping violence and persecution in their home countries. LGBT individuals throughout the world are subjected to unthinkable violence and abuse on account of their sexuality and/or gender identity. The US government explicitly recognizes these individuals as a class in particular need of protection, allowing them to access our most comprehensive protective immigration program, asylum. However, the US immigration system is complex and constantly evolving, making it difficult for asylum-seekers to navigate on their own. Without representation, applicants experience a success rate of 13%, while represented applicants can expect a favorable outcome 75% of the time nationally, with success rates near 90% in the San Francisco Bay Area.
