The Ca Renters Legal Advocacy and Education Fund enforces state housing law, via lawsuit, to make housing in California more affordable and accessible.
About This Cause
Local governments all over California routinely refuse to permit construction of subsidized housing and even unsubsidized apartment projects, citing concerns over traffic and neighborhood character. The cumulative affect of these many individual refusals is to make housing more expensive by (1) making it overall less available and (2) by effectively outlawing lower cost types of housing (apartments and rowhomes). In addition to making housing more expensive overall, this phenomenon also perpetrates segregation by income and therefore race. CaRLA sues local governments to enforce state housing and desegregation laws.
