Washington, District of Columbia, 20001 United States

Mission Statement

Our mission is to ensure the smooth reintegration and success of returning citizens in the Washington metropolitan area through hands-on and authentic mentoring, guidance, training, networking, and other supports and referrals to needed services.

About This Cause

Founded in 2015, Changing Perceptions (CP) stands as a pillar of transformation and renewed opportunity in the Washington metropolitan area, with a deep-seated commitment to empowering returning citizens. Our mission goes beyond offering a second chance; we are dedicated to providing a fair and equitable pathway back into society for those navigating the crucial reentry phase after incarceration. At CP, we believe in the power of personal transformation through comprehensive support. Our approach is a unique blend of hands-on mentoring, individualized guidance, job training and employment matching, financial assistance, social work, case management, and a variety of other supportive services and referrals. This methodology is tailored to ease the reintegration process for our participants, facilitating a smoother transition back into the community. Each year, we proudly reach over 100 currently and formerly incarcerated individuals. Our efforts are driven by a dynamic team of 6 full-time staff members, including roles such as an executive director, director of reentry services, social worker, case manager, administrative coordinator, and outreach specialist. Additionally, our mission is further enhanced by the invaluable contributions of 7 part-time mentors. What sets CP apart is our leadership and operation by individuals who have firsthand experience with the challenges of incarceration, including our executive director. This unique perspective ensures our services are delivered with an unmatched level of understanding and empathy. Our impact since 2020 speaks volumes: we have achieved a 100% anti-recidivism rate among all active participants, a clear indicator of our program's effectiveness in preventing reoffending. This remarkable accomplishment was nationally recognized in October 2023 when CP received the esteemed Justice Impact Award from the Opportunity Finance Network, following a nomination from the National Community Reinvestment Coalition. The strategic direction of CP is guided by a committed board of directors. Our board convenes quarterly, focusing on steering the organization toward achieving its visionary goals and expanding its impact. As we continue our journey, we invite you to be a part of this transformative cause. Your support and contributions to Changing Perceptions not only aid in offering a second chance to those in need but also play a crucial role in building a more inclusive and just society. Join us in this vital mission to change lives and perceptions, one individual at a time.
