Mission Statement

In Nairobi, Kenya, schools are left to largely fend for themselves. The government refuses to fund them, and yet requires students to wear uniforms at risk of arrest or intervention of the authorities. As the majority of families who live in Nairobi live in extreme poverty, they can't afford uniforms and many children are denied access to education. Those that do receive an education learn in environments that are poor for fostering growing independent minds. The buildings are in shambles, and the learning materials are past their prime. Soma For Life was founded to initially aid two schools in Nairobi, Kenya. We are a a 501(c)(3) charity, and all contributions are tax deductible. Soma's founder, Vipul Shah, believes that you never stop being a student, and holds implicit value in a fundamental education for youth. Soma’s Mission: To provide comprehensive education support for schools, students and families in need. Soma’s Vision: To help every child get a chance to succeed.

About This Cause

Vipul travelled to Nairobi, Kenya in June 2015 and July 2016 and visited two schools, the Kisaju Dikpak Secondary School, and the Karuna School. Upon his return, he described the classrooms the Karuna School without electricity and over crowded. The iron sheets being held together to make the school classrooms were falling apart, creations of corrugated tin and masterful engineering with whatever other materials available were banded together. Each desk table was 12 inches wide and several feet long, shared with as many as 5 students. School supplies were limited, and the blackboards were so scratched up and used that he couldn't even read it! He was amazed the kids could see anything at all. Inspired by the bright students and welcoming teachers, Vipul decided to partner with the Kisaju Dikpak Secondary School and the Karuna School and raise funds to help them improve the quality of their education and the environment they learn in. All funds collected will be donated directly to the school administrator at each school who is totally vetted and trusted, and will avoid contact with corrupt government officials. The money raised for this specific campaign will be used to rebuild the Karuna School buildings with new corrugated tin metal on all sides. The two Specific projects: 1. Financing construction of a Greenhouse in Kisaju for the Kisaju Deepak Secondary School in Nairobi, Kenya. The school was newly built and started admitting the first class in 2016, and is a partnership between the government who provides teachers, and the parents who provide all the other resources. The school was built by a private foundation and will have eight classes of 40 students each. They will of course need the necessary supplies and to be fed. The initial class of 2016 is the first class and is comprised of 80 students. When they graduate to the next level, the new kids will come in. We are therefore, currently involved in funding and building a greenhouse that the school can grow their own vegetables and be self-sufficient to feed the student/teacher population. Once we finish this we are going to start requesting donations and supplies to build a science laboratory. 2. Our second project is the rehabilitation of Karuna School in Mathare Slum, Nairobi and feeding these students. These students and their parents have limited or no resources and are largely ignored by the government and society in general. We are raising funds to provide for rebuilding the dilapidated structures they are holding classes in and also involved in helping feed the kids. The following link will provide a video of the current project at Karuna School taken in August 2016: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c8zLMXJUHLk Thank you for helping us to help the deserving students and their families.
