Mission Statement

The mission of the Kids’ Book Bank is to foster improved literacy and a love of reading by providing free books to children in need. We distribute tens of thousands of books every month through partner agencies and schools that teach parents to read with their children and inspire children to read. Our goal is to break the poverty cycle by exposing children to language and reading from birth – fostering literacy skills, opening their minds to the world beyond their neighborhood and fueling their imagination.

About This Cause

I. MISSION AND HISTORY Our mission is to foster improved literacy and a love of reading by providing free books to children in need. Our goal is to break the poverty cycle by exposing low-income children to language and reading from birth – fostering literacy skills, opening their minds to the world beyond their neighborhood and fueling their imagination. We opened the Kids’ Book Bank in February 2016 have since distributed 2.9 million books, engaged 6,000 volunteers, reached more than 100,000 kids, and partnered with more than 1,000 community agencies and groups. II. OUR IMPACT We collaborated with key community stakeholders to develop a distribution strategy with lasting impact. Our first priority is to promote kindergarten-readiness through early intervention programs, enabling them to create literacy programs that empower parents and caregivers to read with their children. We also partner with youth-serving agencies community-wide that are now engaging children to read and cherish these books of their own. We are fostering child and family literacy; for example: • During home visits, outreach workers from 7 agencies are gifting our early childhood books to 3,200 at-risk new moms every month for 2-4 years as they teach them to read with their children. • Starting Point is training 300+ home daycare providers to read with children, giving each 10 of our books each quarter; the following quarter, the books are sent home with the children to read with family. • Inner-city teen groups come to the Kids’ Book Bank to sort and box books for us and then (excitedly) select books to take back for themselves, their families and their clubs. • Pediatricians are giving our books to low-income patients as they prescribe daily reading. • The Cleveland Metropolitan School District and other schools have distributed more than 600,000 of our books through school and parent events. • Churches, libraries and schools are using the books to prevent "summer slide" by distributing them to the children at their summer lunch programs. Every Cleveland child from birth through 8th grade receives at least 4 quality books in a meaningful way that inspires him/her to read. Our community believes in our mission – more than 6000 volunteers have helped, including individuals and corporate and civic groups. We are stretched to accommodate all the groups that want to come sort books! We have received generous funding from community and family foundations, companies and individuals. By adding staff and bringing more efficiencies to our operation, we will expand our reach even further in the near-term. We have an endless supply of books - and there is endless need. Together we are creating a city of readers – and a next generation of successful lifelong learners. Thank you for your consideration.
